In the realm of leadership, the pursuit of perfection can often be a paralyzing endeavor. Yet, history and scripture offer a different narrative: one where flaws do not disqualify, but rather, when coupled with faithfulness, can lead to profound favor and impact. This is the essence of Kingdom Factor, an organization co-founded by Ray Hilbert, dedicated to equipping Christian business leaders to lead with integrity, skill, and a heart after God's own.
Ray Hilbert’s journey with Kingdom Factor is a testament to this truth, rooted in the powerful imagery of Psalm 78:72, which describes David shepherding with “integrity of heart and with skillful hands.” David, a man after God’s own heart, was undeniably flawed. He made significant mistakes, yet his faithfulness and God’s favor remained. This paradox forms the bedrock of Kingdom Factor’s mission: to cultivate leaders who, despite their imperfections, are committed to God’s will.
Kingdom Factor focuses on three core outcomes for its participants: first, developing leaders who, like David, are “men and women after God’s own heart.” Second, fostering businesses that operate with “integrity of heart,” meaning Christ-centered, biblically oriented organizations. And third, encouraging “skillful hands,” ensuring operational excellence in all business endeavors. This holistic approach recognizes that true leadership integrates spiritual depth with practical competence.
Ray’s own story is a powerful illustration of this principle. In the mid-90s, after a business venture imploded, leaving him in financial distress and questioning his path, he experienced a profound lack of Christian business community. He had spiritual community, but not a space where seasoned Christian business leaders could help him navigate the complexities of his professional failures. This personal crucible led to a revelation: “God never wastes a story.” Out of this season of loss, Ray felt compelled to invite a handful of Christian business leaders to a lunch meeting, with no agenda other than to discuss life, faith, and business. To his astonishment, 15 individuals showed up, and nine expressed a desire for more. This humble beginning, born from a personal struggle, blossomed into what is now Kingdom Factor, a movement dedicated to fostering authentic community among Christian business leaders.
For Ray, living out his faith in leadership is an intentional daily practice. It involves seeking wisdom from scripture, but also rigorously applying personal core values. Grace, for instance, is paramount. Ray believes in extending grace to others, recognizing that everyone is flawed and imperfect. This translates into a leadership style that balances accountability with compassion, understanding that external pressures can impact performance. He strives to err on the side of grace, understanding that “grace overrules.”
Another foundational value for Ray is the “mindset of abundance.” He firmly believes that “where God guides, He provides.” This conviction liberates him from a scarcity mindset, fostering a sense of freedom from competition for resources, finances, or reputation. This abundance mentality allows him to lead with generosity and trust in God’s provision. Furthermore, Ray champions radical honesty: “Just tell the truth and see what happens.” This commitment to authenticity eliminates the need for posturing or remembering fabricated narratives, fostering genuine relationships and trust.
Decision-making in leadership often involves navigating tension. Ray highlights the “stewardship versus servanthood test.” While servanthood focuses on ministering to the individual, stewardship considers the well-being of the entire organization.
Balancing these two, especially in challenging situations like an employee needing to leave early for family reasons, requires wisdom and adherence to core principles. Ray emphasizes that living with conviction by predetermined values simplifies decision-making, as many choices are already aligned with one’s established principles.
Generosity, for Ray, is not merely about giving, but about relationship and obedience. He recalls instances where he’s made financial accommodations for leaders to participate in Kingdom Factor peer groups, prioritizing their growth over strict financial transactions.
Beyond his business, Ray and his wife actively serve in their community, mentoring young leaders, supporting addiction recovery centers, and assisting families battling illness. He views these acts not as mere generosity, but as an expression of obedience, a cheerful giving that reflects a deeper commitment to God’s calling.
Looking back, Ray offers two pieces of advice to his younger self: “Guard your heart above all else, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). And second, “seek wisdom.” He would urge his younger self to immerse himself in a mature, godly community, cultivating an insatiable curiosity to learn from seasoned leaders. This emphasis on wisdom and heart-guarding underscores the enduring principles that have guided his journey.
Ray Hilbert’s story and the mission of Kingdom Factor remind us that leadership is not about being flawless, but about being faithful. It's about embracing our imperfections, leaning into God’s abundance, and intentionally building community where leaders can grow, learn, and impact the world for the Kingdom.
