Mark Gibson's journey through nearly four decades in the Indianapolis business community is a testament to faith-led leadership and an unwavering commitment to purpose. From his early days in sales to becoming a successful entrepreneur and now a Kingdom Factor coach, Mark's story is a powerful illustration of how integrating faith into business can lead to profound impact and transformation.
Mark's career began in sales, where he quickly ascended, eventually becoming an owner of the company he started with. Under his leadership, the company tripled in size and revenue. This initial success laid the groundwork for a pivotal decision in 1999 when, driven by a desire for greater alignment with his values and a need for more family time, Mark and his wife stepped out in faith to start a managed IT services company. This was a bold move, as Mark had no prior experience in the IT industry, having spent 17 years in office equipment sales. Yet, guided by prayer and a deep sense of calling, they built a thriving business that operated for 23 years, eventually selling it to a larger entity. Mark then played a crucial role in expanding his former company's model into 20 different markets across the U.S., gaining invaluable experience in scaling businesses and working with other executives.
Central to Mark's leadership philosophy has always been his faith. Growing up with a mother who instilled in him the power of prayer, Mark learned early on to lean on God for guidance in all aspects of life. This practice continued throughout his business career, from praying before sales calls to seeking divine wisdom for major strategic decisions. A foundational verse, Philippians 4:13, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,' adorned his office door, serving as a constant reminder of his reliance on God. This faith translated into a business culture that prioritized treating employees with dignity and mutual respect, fostering an environment where listening and understanding were paramount.
One of the most defining moments of Mark's faith-led leadership came during the economic downturn of 2008-2011. Faced with an urgent demand from their bank to cut expenses by $70,000 a month, Mark was confronted with the painful prospect of laying off 10 employees. In a moment of profound prayer, he recalled the story of Jesus restoring sight to the blind, asking God for sight to navigate this crisis. He openly shared this vulnerability with his employees, who, in turn, rallied together. Through collective effort, cost-saving measures, and a renewed commitment from every team member, the company not only survived but emerged healthier and stronger. This experience solidified their reputation as a resilient and purpose-driven organization, even becoming a 'poster child' for the Small Business Administration in Indiana.
Mark's faith also profoundly influenced how his company allocated its time, talent, and treasure. Driven by a desire to spend more time with their children, the decision to start their own business was rooted in family values. Financially, the company committed to tithing, giving at least 10% of its earnings back to God. This generosity extended to various community initiatives, including scholarship programs and book awards for youth.
A particularly impactful program involved partnering with the Girls Club of Indianapolis to offer a computer building class for junior high and high school girls, addressing the underrepresentation of minority women in IT. This initiative provided young women with essential skills and a desktop computer, running for nearly a decade. Furthermore, the company supported missions in Haiti, establishing a microloan program that funded almost 38 startup businesses over ten years. Mark personally traveled to Haiti, leveraging his business acumen to train individuals on entrepreneurship, an experience he cherishes as one of the greatest gifts of his CEO journey.
Now, as a Kingdom Factor coach, Mark is passionate about guiding other business leaders to integrate their faith into their professional lives. His advice to those seeking to embark on this journey is rooted in his own experiences: find a trusted coach who can provide an unbiased sounding board, surround yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals, listen to wise counsel, and most importantly, start each day with prayer and humility. This approach, he believes, cultivates the boldness needed for success, a lesson he learned and lived throughout his remarkable career. Mark's transition from corporate success to a focus on significance through coaching is a testament to his enduring belief in the transformative power of faith in the marketplace.
