In a world often driven by profit and worldly success, the concept of integrating faith into business can seem countercultural. Yet, for Dr. John Lybarger, founder of Purpose Driven Consulting and Purpose Driven Ministries, faith isn’t just an add-on; it’s the very operating system that guides every decision, interaction, and strategy. With a rich background spanning over 30 years in leadership development, organizational consulting, and executive coaching, Dr. Lybarger embodies a unique blend of psychological insight, business acumen, and unwavering Christian faith.
Dr. Lybarger’s journey is a testament to lifelong learning and dedicated service. Holding two PhDs—one in industrial and organizational psychology and another in marriage and family therapy—along with multiple Master’s degrees, his academic credentials are as impressive as his practical experience. He’s coached and consulted for federal agencies like the Department of Defense and the IRS, as well as private sector giants such as Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble. Yet, amidst this impressive resume, his core conviction remains: every leader possesses untapped potential, waiting to be unleashed through purpose-driven growth.
For Dr. Lybarger, the integration of faith into his businesses isn’t a compartmentalized effort. "Faith isn’t a separate compartment; it’s really the operating system I rely on," he explains. This means actively living out biblical principles in his daily operations. He references Proverbs 3:5-6, emphasizing trust in the Lord and submission to His ways in all planning, meetings, and decisions. His work is viewed as service for Jesus, echoing Colossians 3:23-24: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Leadership, for him, becomes an act of worship, reflecting Colossians 3:17.
This deep-seated conviction often leads to countercultural decisions. Dr. Lybarger recalls an instance where he chose integrity over a potentially lucrative, but misleading, opportunity. Rather than over-promising results to secure a deal, he opted for complete honesty about his capabilities and limitations. This decision, rooted in biblical principles like Proverbs 11:1 and Leviticus 19:35-36, which condemn dishonest scales and advocate for honest measures, might have seemed like a short-term loss. However, it ultimately deepened trust and fostered healthier, long-term partnerships.
He further illustrates this point with a two-decade-long relationship with a large federal agency. Instead of simply vying for contracts, Dr. Lybarger offered pro bono needs assessments, genuinely seeking to understand the agency's requirements. He would then honestly assess where he could serve best and, crucially, recommend other qualified colleagues for areas beyond his scope. This transparent, partnership-oriented approach, born from his faith-driven values, solidified trust and allowed his business to thrive. His clients, whether of faith or not, recognized and valued his unwavering integrity and authenticity.
For other Christian leaders navigating the complexities of business in a secular world, Dr. Lybarger offers profound encouragement: "Don’t hide your faith at the edge of your business. Let it shape the center." He urges leaders to integrate prayer, scripture, and "kingdom metrics" into every aspect of their operations—from planning and hiring to evaluating success. He emphasizes that leaders are the "light of the world," and their good deeds, shaped by faith, should glorify God (Matthew 5:14-16).
His advice for those beginning this journey is to "start small but consistently." Treat work as worship, commit to integrity in every deal, and trust in the Lord wholeheartedly. Over time, these practices cultivate a culture where faith is naturally visible in how leaders lead, love, and serve through their organizations. Dr. Lybarger’s life and work stand as a powerful testament to the transformative power of integrating faith and business, proving that true success extends far beyond the bottom line.
