From Self-Made to God-Led: Jeff Martin's Journey of Redeemed Business and Legacy

Listen to this article

Jeff Martin, owner of Martin Brothers Contracting, Inc., embodies a profound journey of transformation, demonstrating how a business can be a powerful vessel for living a redeemed life. His story, spanning decades of dedication, personal struggle, and ultimately, a deep re-commitment to faith, offers a compelling blueprint for leaders seeking to integrate their spiritual calling with their professional endeavors.

Jeff's path in the family business began unconventionally. After working summers since eighth grade, he initially left Martin Brothers Contracting for several years in the early 80s. This period, he now realizes, served as an invaluable training ground, echoing the modern family business advice to gain outside experience. Returning to the company in 1986, he worked his way up, eventually purchasing the business in 1999. Today, Martin Brothers Contracting is transitioning to its third generation of ownership, with Jeff's three children and son-in-law taking the reins—a testament to the strong foundation and culture he has meticulously built.

Transitioning the Business to the Next Generation

This transition, while rewarding, has also presented its unique challenges. Moving from sole ownership to a collaborative leadership model with his children has required Jeff to re-evaluate long-held practices and embrace new perspectives. He emphasizes the importance of protecting the company's core values: high quality, attention to detail, and exceptional service. These aren't just business principles; they are reflections of the integrity and dedication that Jeff strives to live out in every aspect of his life.

Faith as the Catalyst for Change

The most impactful chapter of Jeff's story, however, is his faith journey. Growing up in a conservative church tradition, he understood the importance of tithing and giving back, a discipline instilled in him from a young age. Yet, after acquiring the company and experiencing financial success, Jeff admits to a period of drifting, caught up in worldly pursuits. This culminated in a personal crisis in 2012, leading him and his wife, Amy, to rededicate their lives to Christ on December 23, 2012. In March 2013, they were both baptized at Grace Community Church. This pivotal moment marked a profound shift from a superficial faith to a deeply personal and transformative relationship with God. Jeff, now an elder at the church, credits the church for providing the teachings and accountability groups for them to get involved with, especially the men's group for Jeff.

Jeff's faith now permeates every aspect of his life and business. He views his role as a business owner through the lens of Ephesians 2:8-10, recognizing that while salvation is a gift, God places "good works" before us to honor Him. This perspective drives his commitment to his employees, exemplified by his unwavering support for a team member battling aggressive brain cancer. Beyond financial assistance, Jeff and his son Kyle offered spiritual support, leading to the employee's baptism and a miraculous recovery—a powerful testament to God's healing power and the impact of a faith-filled workplace.

Business as a Platform for Ministry

His ministry extends beyond the workplace to his annual vacations in Mexico. What once began as a vacation destination has transformed into a mission field. Through a chance encounter and a simple act of generosity—buying a phone for a local's daughter—Jeff and Amy built a deep relationship with a local Mexican family. This connection blossomed into sharing the Gospel while eating dinner at the family's home, leading to the family's profession of faith and a desire for baptism. This ongoing ministry highlights Jeff's commitment to being God's hands and feet wherever he goes, demonstrating that "good works" are not confined to a church building but are woven into the fabric of everyday life.

Jeff's journey is a powerful reminder that true success is not measured by earthly possessions, but by eternal impact. He strives to bring honor to God, not himself, and to use the blessings he has received to bless others. His story challenges leaders to move beyond superficial faith, embrace accountability, and actively seek opportunities to live out their calling in their businesses, families, and communities. As Martin Brothers Contracting enters its third generation, it carries not just a legacy of quality construction, but a profound testament to a life redeemed and a business transformed by faith.
