In a world increasingly tethered to screens, Michelle Dickerhoof, founder of The Perch Academy, is building a sanctuary where families can reconnect, grow, and thrive – all rooted in unwavering faith. Launching in April 2026 in Baton Rouge, LA, The Perch Academy is more than just a multi-sports and creative arts facility; it's a testament to divine guidance and the power of intentional living.
Michelle's journey began in the spring of 2025 when a clear calling from God prompted her to build something meaningful. While coaching soccer and rugby, and nurturing her creative spirit, she felt a strong pull to create a space that would bring children, parents, and grandparents together. The vision for The Perch Academy solidified: a screen-free environment where families could engage in multi-sports and creative arts, fostering genuine connection and shared experiences all while living out their faith.
Michelle's faith isn't just a part of her life; it's the bedrock of her daily existence and business operations. Each morning begins in her prayer room, seeking wisdom, guidance, and direction. This past year, she's intentionally cultivated the discipline of listening – a practice she emphasizes is crucial for discerning God's voice. “It’s amazing what happens when you stop talking and you start listening,” she shares, highlighting the profound insights gained through stillness.
This commitment extends to her business. Michelle has dedicated The Perch Academy entirely to God, integrating stewardship into every aspect, including financial projections. For the first time, she's included a line item for business tithes, taking her personal practice of tithing to a new level of corporate commitment.
The name 'Perch' holds deep spiritual significance, inspired by the book of Isaiah and the image of an eagle flying high. For Michelle, the eagle symbolizes God's strength and unwavering faith. The Perch Academy is envisioned as a place where God, alongside parents, watches over and guides the growth within its walls. It's a place of oversight, protection, and elevated perspective.
Every decision Michelle has made regarding The Perch Academy has been a step of faith. She acknowledges that creating a screen-free, family-inclusive environment goes against the prevailing cultural grain of 'drop-off' sports facilities. Yet, she is 100% confident this is God's calling. The most significant leap of faith was the decision to move from the West Coast, where she and her husband had lived for nearly 25 years, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Despite having family in Baton Rouge and her son attending LSU, the move was entirely guided by a divine impression that this is where The Perch Academy was meant to be. “The Lord has opened every single door for it to happen,” she affirms, a powerful testament to her obedience and God's provision.
Michelle views her time, talents, and resources as gifts from God, to be stewarded wisely. She is diligent in using her time purposefully, recognizing its precious and finite nature. Her talents, honed through a previous career as a corporate paralegal, provide a strong foundation in organization and business acumen. This, combined with her natural ability to connect with and teach children, forms a powerful synergy for The Perch Academy. Her 'treasure' – the financial resources – are also dedicated to this God-given vision, including the commitment to business tithing.
Michelle's message to fellow Christian business leaders is clear and compelling: “When God presses something on your heart, walk in faith and just do it.” She warns against the enemy's whispers of fear, inadequacy, and doubt. Instead, she encourages unwavering trust and obedience, taking one step at a time. “When you look back and you reflect back, you go, oh my goodness, look at that. I can’t believe it. And it happens, it all happens.”
Her advice is practical and profound: if you have a business idea, set a plan, pray about it, and trust that if it is the Lord’s will, doors will open. Michelle Dickerhoof and The Perch Academy stand as a vibrant example of what can be achieved when faith leads the way, transforming not just individuals, but entire families and communities.
