From Law Enforcement to Kingdom Impact: Aaron Poynter's Journey of Faithful Stewardship

A Divinely Guided Career Shift

Aaron Poynter's journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of faithful stewardship. Once a dedicated law enforcement official, Aaron's life took a divinely guided turn, leading him to a role where his faith not only shapes his leadership but also drives a rapidly expanding initiative to help justice-impacted individuals re-enter the workforce. His story is a compelling narrative of prioritizing God's calling, embracing a stewardship mindset, and witnessing exponential growth as a result.

Aaron's career began in law enforcement, a path he pursued with a deep desire to serve and help people. For 10 years, he excelled, believing this was his ultimate purpose. However, the birth of his first child prompted a significant re-evaluation. His wife's desire to move back to her hometown, closer to family and their church community, opened the door to an unexpected opportunity: a one-year grant-funded project focused on workforce development for justice-impacted individuals. This presented a crucial fork in the road: return to the familiar and secure world of policing, or step out in faith into an unknown, mission-driven endeavor.

Guided by a profound sense of calling, Aaron chose the latter. This decision, initially a leap of faith, became the catalyst for an incredible journey. What started as a small, experimental program in one county in Kentucky quickly grew. The initiative's success in genuinely helping people and impacting the workforce caught the attention of the Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board. This led to expansion, re-funding, and ultimately, elevation to the Department of Workforce Development within the Office of Adult Education. Today, Aaron serves as the Director of the Re-entry and Employment Services Branch, overseeing a team that operates in over 90 counties across the state, constantly expanding and refining their impactful work.

Faith as the Foundation of Leadership

Aaron's leadership is deeply rooted in his faith. He emphasizes that faith, once a periphery consideration, became the driving force in his life when he relinquished control and allowed God to lead. This shift was profoundly influenced by his wife, who helped him recognize the importance of prioritizing his relationship with God. For Aaron, living out his faith in daily operations means letting scripture and God's guidance inform every decision. He likens it to a basketball team: instead of calling God off the bench only when in trouble, he strives to have God as the starting and superstar player, governing every aspect of his life.

A core principle that underpins Aaron's approach is the stewardship mindset. He believes that everything—his family, his position, his interactions, his finances—is not truly 'his' but rather entrusted to him by God. This perspective fosters appreciation and influences his output. He understands that one day he will give an account to God for everything he has done and not done, which drives him to always do the right thing, setting a high benchmark for himself and his team.

Stewardship in Action: Impact at Home and Work

This stewardship mindset has profoundly shaped how Aaron invests his time, talent, and resources. He learned a crucial lesson about the first ministry being at home. There was a time when he was constantly working, believing he was providing for his family, but he was absent. By prioritizing his family and his spiritual walk, he found that his marriage, his presence as a father, and his relationships grew stronger, and paradoxically, his work became even more successful. He realized that aligning his priorities with God's will brought clarity and success, rather than the constant struggle of trying to achieve it on his own.

Aaron's advice to other Christian business leaders is clear: embrace the stewardship mindset. Recognize that every opportunity, every blessing, and every good thing comes from God. We are merely stewards, called to be faithful with what He has provided. He stresses that it's not about being perfect or the most successful, but about being found faithful. This means approaching everything with loyalty, devotion, and love, understanding that all work, when done with an eternal focus, is Kingdom work.

  • Embrace stewardship: see yourself as entrusted by God with your family, work, and resources.
  • Let faith shape every decision, not just as a last resort.
  • Invest first at home: true ministry begins with those closest to you.

Keys to Lasting Kingdom Impact

He also shares two profound insights. First, it's crucial to do the good that God has specifically called us to do, which often requires slowing down, seeking solitude, and listening for His direction. Second, as leaders, our standard must be the benchmark. If we expect honesty, discipline, or commitment from others, we must embody those qualities relentlessly ourselves. By raising our bar and maintaining an eternal focus, we align ourselves with God's purpose, leading to a life of profound impact and fulfillment.

Aaron Poynter's journey exemplifies what happens when faithful stewardship meets courageous leadership—with God's guidance, even the most unexpected paths can lead to extraordinary Kingdom impact.
