In today’s business world, where profit is often valued above principle, Todd Martin, founder of CU Consulting, has dedicated his career to guiding colleges, especially Christian institutions, through difficult seasons. His story highlights the profound impact of faith-centered leadership. By fully surrendering to God’s direction, Todd demonstrates how steadfast integrity and allegiance to biblical values can result not only in significant organizational achievements but also in deep personal satisfaction.
Todd's path wasn't always aligned with his current mission. He describes a period as a “prodigal,” even after committing his life to Christ. It was a journey back to faith, a conscious decision to live differently, that truly reshaped his life and business. This transformation, occurring halfway through his entrepreneurial venture, marked a pivotal shift. “It's really just the last four years that things are operating differently,” Todd shares. “And God directs your paths when you do that. It's amazing. Every contract that has come to the business has not been something sought. God has just brought each one to us.”
Todd's passion as a consultant lies in guiding these institutions to “reimagine themselves without losing the integrity of what they stand for.” His approach is deeply rooted in biblical principles, prioritizing honesty and transparency. “Proverbs 11:3 says, ‘The integrity of the upright guides them.’ "What guides me now is to do things that will be honoring to the Lord. I know, even if it's harder, that if I do it with integrity, God will bless it.”
Todd’s commitment to integrity was unmistakably evident during his work with a financially challenged institution in Nashville. Aware of their limited resources, he proactively reduced his consulting hours from 40 to 20 per week, confident he and their team would meet their objectives within this new framework. By choosing to honor God in this way, Todd witnessed remarkable outcomes: the school achieved a 65% increase in enrollment—the largest gain in four decades. Reflecting on this, Todd says, “I just know God blesses when you make those decisions. And he has blessed in so many ways.”
Todd's journey also highlights the courage required to uphold truth in difficult circumstances. He recalls a challenging encounter where a client's unethical behavior forced him to make a tough choice. “Sometimes you run into people who are not holding the same values that you are and you may be asked to do things that you don't agree with,” he explains. “But what I found is that when you stand on the truth and you hold on to your integrity and speak honestly in those situations, God always does the work.” Todd chose to expose the truth to other leaders, risking a significant contract. “It was a big risk for my business and this contract,” he admits. “But the light was shining on the situation.” His unwavering stance ultimately led to the individual's departure and the school's subsequent thriving.
Central to Todd's daily practice is the concept of “putting on the armor of God.” (Ephesians 6:10-18) His daily routine is to read and visualize this scripture, recognizing the spiritual battles inherent in life and business. “It's a spiritual battle out there,” he asserts. “You have to be in prayer and guard yourself.”
“Wearing the armor of God prepares us with everything we need to handle whatever challenges arise. When we are covered in His armor, we are empowered to make a meaningful impact in whatever we undertake.
Todd's story is a powerful reminder that true success, both personal and professional, is found in aligning with God's will. It's about more than just business; it's about seeing lives transformed, planting seeds of truth, and trusting that God does all the work. Todd's journey from prodigal to purpose-driven leader exemplifies the profound impact of integrity and loyalty to God's way of operating, proving that when you surrender, God truly directs your paths.
