Beyond the Blueprint: Building a Life of Integrated Faith and Business

In a world often driven by ambition and outward success, Seth Roach, owner of Abide Home Improvements, offers a refreshing perspective on leadership and entrepreneurship. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of prioritizing discipleship, integrating faith into every aspect of life, and finding purpose beyond the pursuit of worldly achievements.

Seth's path into the construction industry began in his youth, working alongside his father who was a builder. From framing houses to remodeling, he gained diverse experience. However, his primary objective was never solely career advancement. "My main objective during my life at that time was just to be a full-time disciple," Seth shares. This foundational commitment, born from a profound personal transformation in his late teens, has been the compass guiding his every decision.

His life has been a series of intentional moves, often sacrificing comfort and stability for what he believed was God's calling. From Michigan to Oregon, then to Florida, and back to Michigan, each transition was a step of faith, an internal work in progress. "It's been a windy road for sure," Seth reflects, "and through the process, God has been working things out of me and into me." This internal refining process, often involving being stripped down to zero, taught him to rely on God as his provider and to confront his own ego and misplaced ambitions.

The Importance of Integrated Faith

One of the most significant shifts in Seth's understanding has been the integration of his faith into his entire life, rather than compartmentalizing it. He candidly admits that for a time, ministry was his main drive, with family often taking a backseat. This created friction, which he now recognizes as a crucial learning experience. "God was clearly breaking that," he states. The realization that his primary ministry is his family, and that a consistent, faithful example at home is paramount, has reshaped his priorities.

This integrated approach extends to his business. Seth believes that a Christian business owner should operate with integrity, excellence, and a servant's heart. He challenges the notion that business success is separate from spiritual faithfulness. "To be a business owner, to be integrous, to show up when you say you are going to; you know, to communicate, to be fair with your billing, to be fair with your employees... Literally, treat it as your ministry," he advises. This means viewing employees as individuals Jesus cares about, who He would have us serve, and seeing ourselves as God's provision for them, all while striving for excellence as a reflection of God's character.

Business as Discipleship

Seth's vision for Abide Home Improvements is deeply intertwined with his personal journey. He sees his business as a platform to train his sons, who work alongside him, instilling in them the same values of integrity, hard work, and faith. He acknowledges the challenge of thinking beyond an employee mindset and embracing the larger opportunities God presents, all while maintaining a commitment to quality and trustworthiness.

For Christian business owners who may have prioritized business over discipleship, Seth offers profound advice: "God really wants us to just stop and just look at him and be face to face with him and bring all of our internal drivers, everything before him and realize, Lord, my life is not my own. I'm doing this for you." He emphasizes that true success is not about personal gain but about stewarding resources for God's glory, being willing to suffer for the gospel, and maintaining a strong faith that anchors the soul regardless of external circumstances.

Living with Eternal Perspective

Ultimately, Seth's life and business are a living testament to the belief that our faithfulness in this age directly impacts our roles in God's coming kingdom. "I want to be successful so I can take care of my family, so I can have time, freedom to serve others in my community more," he explains. This perspective shifts the focus from self-centered ambition to a life lived with eternal purpose, where every action, whether in family, ministry, or business, is an act of worship and preparation for what is to come.

Action Steps for Integrated Living

  • Prioritize Discipleship: Intentionally cultivate your relationship with God as your primary identity and focus.

  • Integrate Faith: Break down the walls between your spiritual life and your professional life. See your work as a ministry.

  • Serve with Integrity: Operate your business with honesty, fairness, and a commitment to excellence, reflecting God's character.

  • Family as First Ministry: Recognize and invest in your family as your most important discipleship ground.

  • Embrace the Internal Work: Be open to God's refining process, allowing Him to expose and transform your ways of thinking, your motives, and the intentions of your heart.

  • Live with Eternal Perspective: Anchor your hope in the age to come, understanding that your present faithfulness has implications as to what you are entrusted with when Messiah comes to reign upon the earth.
