Faith, Fitness, and Fortitude: Tyler Eckles on Leading with Purpose

Listen to this article

In a world often driven by fleeting trends and superficial promises, Tyler Eckles, founder of N:OW Performance Group, stands as a beacon of authentic leadership, deeply rooted in faith. A strength and conditioning coach with nearly a decade of experience, Tyler has transformed the lives of hundreds, not just through physical training, but by instilling a holistic approach to well-being that integrates mind, body, and spirit.

Tyler's journey is a testament to the power of conviction. Having trained over 500 individuals, helping them reverse vital statistics, shed medications, and prepare for life's challenges, he now focuses exclusively on empowering men—business owners, executives, and CEOs—to build enduring strength, energy, and resilience. His mission is to equip them to sustain peak performance not only in their professional lives but also within their families and personal spheres.

Leading with Faith: A Daily Choice

For Tyler, living out his faith in his day-to-day operations is not a separate endeavor but an intrinsic part of his leadership. "I am the example for all the people that I work with," he states. This means prioritizing his own spiritual alignment, maintaining a consistent connection with God, and ensuring his internal structure is sound. This personal discipline naturally permeates his interactions, conversations, and coaching philosophy.

He emphasizes the concept of leading a horse to water but requiring it to drink. "I have to instill that in people to understand that, once again, they're the main thing and they are the ones that have to do that. And it's a daily choice." This daily choice extends to staying true to one's word, remaining connected, and immersing oneself in community. Tyler's approach is refreshingly real: he acknowledges that the path to health and longevity isn't always sunshine and rainbows. "It's not going to be a day where you don't want to go to the gym," he admits. "All of these things are going to happen on the daily, on the weekly." His faith provides the fortitude to fortify himself and his clients through uncomfortable situations, intertwining spiritual resilience with physical discipline.

The Defining Moment: A Leap of Faith to Texas

Tyler's testimony of faith-driven decision-making is particularly compelling. Born and raised in New York, he spent years building a successful career in the private gym sector. He was instrumental in growing a business to seven-figure revenues, with plans for expansion and management. Yet, despite the apparent success, a lack of alignment emerged. This tested his faith profoundly, as he felt dejected after pouring so much into a vision that seemed to crumble.

However, this setback was merely a redirection. After a series of personal challenges, Tyler felt a distinct call from God to leave New York and move to Texas. "God was like, this ain't it. You gotta get up and go," he recalls. This meant leaving family, a thriving client base, and the familiar. For months, he questioned his path, wondering if he should even continue in the fitness industry. Yet, through persistent prayer and unwavering trust, he received confirmation that his gift for connecting with and transforming people was indeed his calling.

"I had to step out on faith and just listen to Him, submit to Him, and continue to carry the torch and the gift that I feel like He's bestowed upon me," Tyler shares. This pivotal decision, seemingly counter-intuitive to worldly business logic, ultimately led him to establish NOW Performance Group and fulfill his deeper purpose.

Generosity and Discernment: Investing Time, Talent, and Treasure

When it comes to giving his time, talent, and treasure, Tyler's faith guides his discernment. He's often approached by people seeking fitness advice, recognizing him as a "walking billboard" for health. However, his investment goes beyond superficial requests. He looks for two key qualities in those he serves: open-mindedness and groundedness. "If they're already on this like kind of thought or pedestal, it's not that it's necessarily that I wouldn't work with them. It's more of just a, okay, you already think you have all the answers or you know it all."

His approach is to start with one, build a genuine connection, and see it through. This focused investment, he believes, naturally leads to growth through word-of-mouth and genuine transformation. More profoundly, Tyler asks himself, "Would God honor this?" This question serves as his moral compass, especially in an industry that can often be driven by "money grab and money hungry" motives. He rejects the negativity and infighting prevalent in some fitness circles, choosing instead to focus on the fundamental goal: getting people to move their bodies. "If it gets somebody to move their body, that's the start."

Encouragement for Christian Business Leaders: Reconnect and Re-plug

Tyler offers poignant advice for other Christian business leaders: "Every day there is a test. And to be honest, there are gonna be some days you fall short." The key, he emphasizes, is to recognize that distance from God is often self-imposed. When frustration, ruts, or unanswered questions arise, the solution is to "reconnect, re-plug." This involves not only personal prayer but also utilizing community resources—people who know God, and those who offer trusted outside perspectives.

He cautions against the temptation to isolate oneself in pursuit of discipline. "It's very easy if you're in the earlier stages... to just like, isolate, isolate, like knockout. Be disciplined, do this, do that." Instead, he advocates for auditing one's schedule and seeking counsel. "You could literally be running the same play for like 70 something days. And on the 78th day, you finally try to implement something else and then everything else just changes." Tyler's ultimate message is one of hope and perseverance: "Don't distance yourself. If you notice you are distancing yourself too far, too long. Take a step back and then re-plug. Utilize your resources in your community and look for those, you know, perspectives of people that you trust."

Tyler Eckles embodies the principle that true leadership is an overflow of an integrated life—where faith informs every decision, challenges become catalysts for growth, and purpose fuels every endeavor. His journey reminds us that on this side of the dirt, every new day is another chance to fulfill our God-given purpose.
