Encountering the Living God: Trey Griggs' Journey of Faith in Business and Life

Trey Griggs, a solopreneur, consultant, and author, lives by a profound mission: to ensure that everyone who encounters him or his business feels they have encountered the Living God. This unwavering commitment to faith is the bedrock of his personal and professional life, shaping every decision, interaction, and endeavor.

Griggs, a self-described “Midwest boy” from Kansas City, built his life on strong foundations. Married to his college best friend for over 20 years, he and his wife have two daughters, Hannah (17) and Naomi (15). An avid RV family, they've traveled to 48 states, aiming to hit all 50 before their daughters graduate, fostering deep family bonds through shared adventures.

From Midwestern Roots to Entrepreneurial Purpose

His career path has been anything but conventional. Starting as a high school physics teacher and multi-sport coach, he transitioned into youth ministry before making a bold move into sales in 2010. His initial foray into door-to-door office supply sales in Portland, Oregon, was a crucible that forged his resilience and sales acumen. “100% commission, you only eat what you kill,” he recalls, a stark contrast to his previous career. This challenging experience prepared him for a successful decade in technology and staffing sales. In 2022, he launched BETA Consulting Group, initially as a marketing agency, but soon realized his true calling as a solopreneur, focusing on consulting for startups and executives.

Griggs specializes in helping startups with branding, messaging, marketing, and go-to-market strategies. He helps companies tell their story, gather social proof, and turn initial customers into enthusiastic fans. A key aspect of his work is personal branding for executives, understanding that “consumers will always connect themselves to a person faster than they will a logo.” This belief aligns perfectly with his upcoming book, “Rewire Your Soul,” which explores self-awareness and understanding one's authentic self, a foundational element for genuine branding.

Faith as the Foundation of Business

His faith is not just a personal belief; it's the driving force behind his business. Inspired by a men's conference where he felt God urging him to make his business about Him, Griggs embraced this calling. His personal mission statement – “I exist to bring people together, to share with them the hope that I have in Jesus Christ, that they might know him and live an abundant life” – extends directly into his professional endeavors. He strives for excellence in his work, viewing it as a testimony to Jesus's presence in his life. “Whatever you do, do it all to the glory of the Lord,” he quotes, emphasizing the biblical principle of excellence.

Griggs is unafraid to explicitly share his faith and give God credit for his successes. He believes that authenticity in branding naturally attracts like-minded individuals and repels those who don't align. This approach has brought him clients who share similar values, making his work more enjoyable and impactful.

He recounts powerful instances where his faith intersected with his business. After praying for opportunities to impact clients spiritually, he witnessed God's faithfulness. One client, reeling from an employee's wife's suicide, found encouragement and spiritual guidance from Griggs. Another client, unprompted, sought advice on finding a church. These moments, Griggs notes, are direct answers to his prayers.

Trusting God in Business Challenges

Even in adversity, his faith remains steadfast. When a client short-paid him $44,000, a significant sum, Griggs experienced a profound lesson in trust. Despite the initial hurt, he felt God's reassurance: “Whether he pays you or not, I've got you.” In a remarkable turn of events, an old investment in advisory shares from another company vested, providing almost the exact amount he was owed. This experience solidified his trust in God's provision, reinforcing the biblical principle of seeking God first. “It's like the fourth or fifth time in my life that He's done that,” he shares, highlighting a pattern of divine intervention.

A Life Shaped by Generosity and Service

His faith also dictates how he allocates his time, talent, and treasure. Tithing has been a foundational element of his marriage since day one, a practice he learned early in life. He and his wife have consistently increased their giving, believing it's a reason for God's continued provision. They are deeply involved in their church and the connected Christian school, where his wife serves as principal and his daughters attend. Griggs leads a dads' prayer group and volunteers with the middle school and high school chapel youth band. This rhythm of serving and giving is an integral part of their lives, a testament to their belief that “God's really in control.”

Encouragement to Other Christian Business Owners

For other Christian business owners, Griggs offers a powerful encouragement: “Don't be afraid to go all in spiritually.” He urges them to surrender control to God, be willing vessels, and pray for opportunities to have important conversations. He believes that while business success is important, what truly matters is whether people encounter Jesus through their interactions. “All of these things are going to pass away. What matters is, 'do people that I work with know Jesus'?” he emphasizes. He also challenges them not to fear potential pushback, reminding them that Jesus himself said, “They're gonna hate you because they hate me.”

Griggs concludes with two profound insights: God always writes better stories for our lives than we write for ourselves, and these stories are meant to be shared. He encourages everyone to let God lead and to boldly share their unique experiences and perspectives, as these stories can be a powerful source of encouragement and benefit to others. “That makes life really, really a lot of fun. It makes it sweet.”
