From Brokenness to Breakthrough: How Faith and Mentorship Fueled a Business Transformation

Listen to this article

Danielle Phebus, founder of CLC Designs, embodies the powerful intersection of faith, resilience, and strategic mentorship. Her journey from personal brokenness to entrepreneurial triumph offers a compelling narrative for leaders seeking to integrate their faith with their business endeavors.

Danielle's faith journey, rooted in a Christian upbringing, took a profound turn after a divorce. This challenging period, marked by shame and condemnation, ultimately led her to a deeper understanding of God's grace and mercy. Instead of hearing, "you shouldn't be divorced, that's not Christian of you," Danielle recalls. "It was God saying, "I know what you've done and you are still my child and I'm still here and we can make this better." This transformative realization of grace became the bedrock for her future endeavors, shifting her perspective from a judgmental God to one of unwavering love and support.

The Birth of CLC Designs: Finding Purpose Through Pain

The genesis of CLC Designs emerged from another period of struggle. After experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss, and postpartum depression with her youngest child, Danielle found solace and purpose in crafting. What began as a therapeutic outlet – making anything and everything that brought her joy, from ponchos to tea towels – soon blossomed into a business. Her tea towels, initially adorned with scripture, sold well on Etsy, sparking the idea to transition into apparel screen printing in 2020. This seemingly natural progression, however, presented a steep learning curve.

Danielle faced significant challenges, particularly in a male-dominated industry she entered without prior experience in a screen print shop. The leap from tea towels to apparel proved technically demanding, especially when attempting to print on challenging fabrics like sweatshirts. A pivotal moment arrived when an order for a local school went awry; the screen print transfers she had outsourced failed after washing. "My world crumbles," Danielle admits, describing her immediate reaction to shut down the business. However, instead of succumbing to despair, she turned to faith.

Faith, Mentorship, and Divine Encounters

Walking a trail, listening to worship music, Danielle prayed for guidance. "God, I don't know what to do here... please show me a way, give me some answers, give me some clarity, anything." Her prayer was answered almost immediately. Opening her phone, she saw a Facebook post from a renowned screen printing expert who had recently been in her area. Danielle, feeling a divine connection, messaged him, explaining her struggles. Within ten minutes, he invited her to his shop. This encounter led to a transformative mentorship, where she learned the intricacies of screen printing, discovered her equipment was the problem, and ultimately invested in a new press. "That one meeting changed everything," she affirms. "And that was God. Me surrendering and saying, 'I can't do this without you. I can't do this. I need help.' And he provided it."

This experience solidified Danielle's understanding of God's faithfulness in her business. Her business, initially focused on scripture-laden products, evolved to printing for sports teams and businesses. This shift prompted a reevaluation of her "Kingdom Impact." She found clarity in a quote from Martin Luther: "The cobbler doesn't need to put crosses on his shoes to do good work... the craftsmanship is what matters." This insight allowed her to understand that her dedication to quality, customer service, and the values she instilled in her company—integrity, generosity, and respect—were, in themselves, a testament to her faith. "My employees will know why I do the work that I do," she states. "They don't necessarily have to believe... but they're going to know who I am, and this is why I do the work that I do."

The Crucial Role of Support and Values in Business

Beyond divine intervention and professional mentorship, Danielle credits her husband's unwavering support as a crucial element of her success. His encouragement has allowed her to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams, even when it means temporarily shifting household responsibilities. To her, this highlights the often-overlooked yet pivotal role of a supportive spouse in a woman's business journey.

For other business owners seeking to integrate their faith, Danielle emphasizes the importance of establishing a clear mission and core values. "Having those laid out, especially as you're hiring people... really helps set the tone for having Kingdom values in your business." These foundational principles, established before significant growth, ensure that the company culture reflects its spiritual underpinnings. As CLC Designs prepares to move into a new, larger space, Danielle looks forward to a "dream day" with her team, where they will collectively envision the future, grounded in their shared values and God's leading.

Conclusion: Kingdom Impact Through Excellence

Danielle Phebus's story is a testament to the power of faith, the invaluable role of mentorship, and the transformative potential of embracing challenges as opportunities for divine intervention. Her journey with CLC Designs illustrates that true Kingdom Impact in business is not always about overt religious symbols, but about the integrity, excellence, and values embedded in every aspect of the work.
