Travis Smith, CFO of Superior Underground, embodies this philosophy, demonstrating how a blend of practical experience and spiritual principles can navigate challenges, foster growth, and inspire those around him.
Superior Underground specializes in horizontal directional drilling and hydro excavation, primarily serving the utility repair sector. Their innovative methods, utilizing high-pressure water and suction, allow for precise excavation around delicate underground utilities, a task impossible with traditional heavy machinery. Smith's journey to the CFO role is unique, rooted in a family business where he gained hands-on experience in sales, inventory, customer service, and even mechanical repairs. This diverse background provided him with an invaluable operational perspective that many finance professionals lack.
“The difference between myself and what I would consider a traditional accountant is the path that I took to get to where I’m at,” Smith explains. This comprehensive understanding allows him to connect financial data with real-world business operations, enabling more effective conversations with his team and driving meaningful change within the organization. He excels at demystifying financial information, making it accessible and relevant to every employee, thereby fostering a sense of shared ownership and impact.
For Smith, integrating faith into his daily business dealings is fundamentally about how he treats others. “I’m a big proponent of, you know, treat others as I want to be treated, treat everybody with respect. You treat the janitor with the same respect you treat the CEO with.” This principle guides his interactions, especially during difficult conversations, where respect and grace pave the way for constructive outcomes. He believes that by approaching people with respect and offering grace for mistakes, strong relationships are built, which are essential for collective achievement.
This commitment to people extends to his leadership style. Smith finds immense satisfaction in fostering growth and development within his team, providing learning opportunities, and exposing them to new concepts. He sees it as his duty to support their professional journey, even in a flat organizational structure where traditional promotions are limited. “Everybody on my team should be learning and growing every day, and that’s through my leadership, you know, how I behave, how I talk, how I treat them, how I treat everybody else in the business. And so leading by example from that standpoint is really important as well.” The greatest compliment he’s received is being told he’s the best boss someone has ever worked for, a testament to his people-first approach.
Smith’s faith has been a steadfast anchor during periods of intense professional adversity. He recalls the 2008 economic recession, where as CFO for a restaurant franchise, he faced immense financial pressure. Heavily leveraged and battling eroding margins, he found himself constantly praying for solutions and guidance. Despite the toll on his mental and physical health, he successfully navigated the business through three and a half arduous years. This experience was revisited in 2023 when he acquired a distressed company out of bankruptcy, triggering what he describes as PTSD from the previous crisis. Yet, armed with a more secure faith and greater self-trust, he again sought divine guidance, successfully stabilizing the company before moving on.
Reflecting on these crucibles, Smith acknowledges the profound lessons learned. “God doesn’t give us anything that he doesn’t know we can handle.” While challenging in the moment, these struggles revealed his inner strength and the importance of humility. A self-proclaimed 'Type A' personality, he learned to release his need for control and truly open himself to divine intervention. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is when I ask for his support and help, and I’m willing to allow him to provide it, that he will.” This willingness to listen and adapt, even when the answer isn't what he initially expected, has been a cornerstone of his resilience.
For aspiring Christian business leaders, Smith offers two key pieces of advice. First, “remain humble and remain faithful and ask for that guidance in times of struggle and times of challenges, and be open to allowing the influence or the answer to come to you in whatever way it’s going to come to you.” Second, he emphasizes adhering to godly principles in all interactions – with employees, vendors, and customers – but crucially, also with oneself. “Don’t forget to do it to ourselves,” he advises, highlighting the importance of self-grace for those who, like him, often demand perfection from themselves.
Now, with the financial foundations of Superior Underground solidified, Smith is shifting his focus to what he loves most: education, development, and mentorship. He recently launched an “Accounting 101” class for his team, connecting daily tasks to their impact on financial statements and the company’s overall success. He believes in empowering his employees by explaining the 'why' behind their work and soliciting their input.
“When you have input and buy-in, they’ll work way harder for it than they will if I just tell them, this is what you’re going to do.” This approach not only builds a stronger team but also provides Smith with opportunities to refine his own leadership skills, practicing accountability and effective coaching.
