Dr. Cheroll Dossett's story is a powerful testament to faith, resilience, and the transformative power of community. What began as a challenging diagnosis of ovarian cancer has blossomed into a profound journey of healing, purpose, and a renewed commitment to serving others. This article serves as a follow-up to our previous conversation, where Dr. Dossett bravely shared her initial struggles from a hospital bed. Today, we celebrate her triumphant emergence as a cancer survivor, a beacon of hope, and an inspiration to many.
Dr. Dossett’s ovarian cancer was localized and successfully removed through a total hysterectomy using robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. This outcome, she emphasizes, is incredibly rare for ovarian cancer, which is often aggressive. The medical team, initially prepared for extensive procedures including lymph node removal, found the tumor contained, waiting to be removed. “It’s all gone, and it’s all God,” she recounts, echoing the surgeon’s words, “Somebody upstairs really loves you and has a purpose to fulfill.”
Her journey was not without its trials. Leading up to the surgery, Dr. Dossett found herself disconnected from family due to disagreements, seeking peace amidst the storm. It was during this vulnerable time that an unexpected blessing arrived: a woman she had only coached virtually, living in Oklahoma City, flew to New York and stayed by her side through the entire surgery. This act of selfless support deeply impacted Dr. Dossett, revealing the unseen ripple effects of our influence and the power of divine assignments.
Beyond the physical healing, Dr. Dossett's experience brought a profound spiritual awakening. She describes a period of intense medical challenges in the months preceding her cancer diagnosis – multiple hospitalizations for dangerously high blood pressure, an allergic reaction that nearly cost her life, and the discovery of a blood clot that miraculously disappeared. These events, coupled with diagnoses of type 2 diabetes, chronic heart failure, kidney disease, and glaucoma, were her “wilderness” – a period where God met her in her deepest struggles.
“I thank God for the cancer,” she bravely states, acknowledging that this profound challenge forced her to sit with trauma and hurt, rather than running from it. It was a catalyst for her to hear God’s direction with unprecedented clarity. This newfound clarity has propelled her into a new season of purpose. Just two weeks into her recovery, God inspired her to curate an anthology titled “The Final Act, Ashes to Glory.” This book, featuring stories of resilience from 12 women over 50, including a three-time breast cancer survivor who also lost her daughter, is a testament to community, sisterhood, healing, and unwavering faith.
Dr. Dossett’s vision extends further. Having experienced firsthand the critical need for housing and support during illness, she is now driven to establish a non-profit that provides safe spaces for women battling ovarian cancer to heal and recover. This initiative stems from her own experience of having to move three times during her treatment and navigating appointments alone. Her heart's desire is to ensure no other woman faces such a journey without a supportive community and a stable home.
Dr. Cheroll Dossett's story is a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, God is at work, weaving blessings into our lives and preparing us for a greater purpose. Her testimony of healing, the blessings of community, and her unwavering commitment to serving others exemplify the true essence of transformational leadership. As she embarks on this new chapter, including a return to Costa Rica for spiritual healing and continued work on her non-profit, Dr. Dossett stands as a living testament to God’s restorative power and the incredible impact one life can have when surrendered to divine will.
