In the face of unimaginable challenges, Tieal Bishop, a single mother with three young children, including a medically fragile child, not only navigated her personal journey but also birthed a transformative organization: A Rosie Place for Children. Her story is a testament to unwavering faith, fearless vision, and the incredible power of community.
Tieal's journey began with her son, Max, who was born with a rare condition and later contracted RSV, leading to significant medical complications. Doctors predicted Max would never walk or talk, and a third of his brain was missing. Yet, Max defied all odds, a miracle that fueled Tieal's determination. "He's nothing short of a miracle," she shares, "Max gave me the drive, the wherewithal, the tenacity to believe we could do this for all the moms who will not have the same outcome; that continue to care for their medically fragile child."
This profound experience ignited a passion to create a place where families with medically fragile children could find respite, understanding, and a sense of belonging. In 2003, A Rosie Place was born, the foundation named O'Hana Heritage Foundation, inspired by the Hawaiian word for family, and family means 'nobody gets left behind or forgotten.' Tieal, with no prior business, fundraising, or construction background, embarked on a trial-by-fire journey, learning every aspect of building a non-profit from the ground up. She recalls, "I was a visionary. Why I still love it is because I'm constantly creating the next thing."
One of Tieal's superpowers was her fearless approach to asking for help. She didn't shy away from bringing together competing entities, like seven commercial construction owners, to collaborate on the building of A Rosie Place. Her audacious spirit and compelling vision convinced them to join her mission. She recounts a pivotal meeting with a community pillar, Art Decio, where she walked in without a single piece of paper. "I figured you would either see my vision or you wouldn't, and it wasn't going to be a piece of paper that made the difference," she told him. Ten minutes later, she walked out with a $25,000 check. This fearless attitude, coupled with an unwavering belief in God's hand at work, allowed her to secure crucial funding and support to raise the necessary $2.3 million to build A Rosie Place for Children.
Building A Rosie Place as a single mom presented its own set of unique challenges. "I was a single mom for nine years building A Rosie Place. I believe anybody can do it. I'm not special. You can do anything if you make up your mind," she asserts, emphasizing the importance of determination and divine guidance. She credits God's providence for every step of the journey, noting that even in moments of financial strain, solutions would miraculously appear. She recalls a time when the organization was down to $30,000, and she reached out to draw in her relationship with a local financial institution and negotiated a line of credit to bring in help by expanding their team and the rest is history.
Tieal's vision extends far beyond Indiana. She dreams of a future where all medically fragile children across America will have access to respite care. She's actively working to create a replicable model, a 'playbook' for others to build similar facilities, ensuring the "magic of A Rosie Place" can be shared nationwide. Her innovative "Power a Season" program, which secures significant gifts for transformational initiatives rather than operational costs, demonstrates her creative approach to fundraising and her commitment to long-term impact.
Beyond the physical structure, A Rosie Place focuses on creating opportunities to experience childhood for these children. "Let us be your child's first sleepover," Tieal says, describing how they provide opportunities for art, friendship, and joy that many medically fragile children miss out on.
Her latest project, "HeARTWorks Studio," an art studio designed with the unique needs of these children in mind. It will include AI art creation and ceiling-mounted screens, she calls "sky screens" for children in tilted-back wheelchairs, exemplifying her dedication to fostering creativity and belonging.
Tieal Bishop's story is a powerful narrative of resilience, faith, and transformative leadership. From personal adversity, she forged a path to serve others, demonstrating that with a clear vision, a fearless spirit, and a deep reliance on a higher power, seemingly impossible dreams can become life-changing realities for countless families.
