Dan Byler's journey with LaGwana Printing, Inc. is a testament to the power of faith, a 'figure-it-out-as-you-go' mentality, and the unwavering belief that doing the right thing leads to divine provision. From humble beginnings to a thriving enterprise, Dan and his wife's story is interwoven with pivotal life moments, demonstrating how their business became a conduit for God's blessings, particularly in their calling to international adoption and the care of a child with a very challenging medical condition.
Dan's faith journey began in a conservative Mennonite home, a quiet, consistent path rather than a dramatic conversion. This steady foundation would prove crucial as he navigated the complexities of marriage, family, and entrepreneurship. After college, where he met his wife, Dan found his passion in publishing while working for another company. When that business closed, he took a job at a local business and was able to develop and hone his skills in marketing as an in-house marketing director. Three years later, he and his wife, with three young children and a guaranteed income of just $700 every two weeks, took a leap of faith to start their own typesetting business from their home. This was the genesis Aurora Services which later became LaGwana Printing, Inc.
Their 'figure-it-out-as-you-go' approach was immediately put to the test. In their second year, a tax bill loomed, with a sum that felt insurmountable for the young family. It was during this time of fervent prayer that Herman, the owner of The People's Exchange, approached Dan with an offer to sell his business. With no money for taxes, let alone a business acquisition, Dan's innovative spirit kicked in. He asked the owner if he would seller-finance the purchase and, remarkably, if he could add to the loan to cover his tax debt. Herman agreed, and The People's Exchange became part of the Bylers' business. This 'God moment' was a profound lesson in provision, solidifying Dan's trust that when you do the right thing, God will provide, often in unexpected ways.
This principle of provision became a cornerstone of their lives and business, especially as they felt a strong calling to international adoption. The business, initially a means of survival, transformed into a vehicle for their deepest desires. LaGwana enabled them to adopt internationally four times, bringing home four children from China. Each adoption was a profound experience, with the couple traveling to China, often with their other children, to embrace their new family members. Dan recalls the money always being there, a consistent affirmation of God's faithfulness.
One of the most challenging, yet ultimately transformative, aspects of their adoption journey was with their child with a medical challenge. Initially believed to have hip dysplasia, it was later discovered to be muscular dystrophy, which often leads to a very short life span. This diagnosis, initially devastating, became a testament to their unwavering faith and proactive approach. After attending a conference for families of children with this particular form of muscular dystrophy, they had a profound shift, moving from 'planning a funeral' to 'planning a life,' as they discovered new medical advancements and a community of support around them. The business provided the financial stability to navigate the extensive care and support required, including the current pursuit of a mechanical engineering degree at a specialized college that accommodates mobility needs. This journey, from fear to fierce advocacy, highlights the profound impact of their 'figure-it-out' mentality coupled with deep faith.
Dan's leadership style evolved with the business. As LaGwana grew, he learned the importance of empowering his employees while staying connected to the work that gave him life – collaborating on new projects and helping people grow. He fostered a culture rooted in Christian values, openly sharing his faith and expecting employees to uphold those standards, while emphasizing that treating people right is paramount. This approach, while unconventional by some business standards, has been the bedrock of LaGwana's success and its ability to support their family's extraordinary journey.
Dan's story is a powerful reminder that true wealth extends beyond monetary gain. It's found in the richness of family, the impact on lives, and the unwavering trust in a faithful God. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: be true to who you are, treat people right, and trust that if you do the right thing, God will provide, perhaps not in the way you expect, but always in the way you need.
