Todd Lingel's life took a tragic turn at the tender age of three when he lost his mother and sister to a drunk driver. This profound loss, though initially a source of unspoken anxiety and depression, ultimately became the crucible for a powerful kingdom purpose: the Kares Foundation. Through Kares, Todd is transforming his pain into a platform for prevention, education, and spiritual guidance for youth across the nation.
Todd's early life was marked by a persistent, undefined feeling of 'something missing.' This feeling, later identified as general and separation anxiety, culminated in a period of deep depression and a near-suicide attempt. It was a divine intervention, a moment of profound spiritual clarity, that pulled him back from the brink. Seeking Christian counseling, Todd finally processed the grief of his early loss, leading to a true, heartfelt forgiveness of the drunk driver – a forgiveness that went beyond mere words.
This personal transformation ignited a passion to help others, particularly young people, avoid similar pitfalls. The Kares Foundation, named in honor of his mother Karen and sister Shelly (K-A-R-E-S), focuses on critical issues affecting youth today: peer pressure, social media awareness, distracted driving, and the dangers of marijuana use. Todd's approach is holistic, aiming to equip kids with the tools to make sound decisions that will positively impact their entire lives.
Kares Foundation operates with a clear mission: education, prevention, communication, and support. Todd travels to schools and youth groups, sharing his compelling testimony and offering practical workshops. He utilizes engaging methods like 'drunk goggles' and mock sobriety tests to vividly illustrate the consequences of impaired driving. A cornerstone of his work is fostering open communication, encouraging young people to reach out to him if they find themselves in trouble, acting as a bridge between them and their parents.
While Kares Foundation is currently a small, growing organization, Todd's vision is expansive. He dreams of a book titled "Unseen Scars," a compilation of stories from individuals and first responders, which will be used to fund the foundation's work. The ultimate goal is to establish "Camp Kares" in all 50 states, or a central facility where youth affected by drugs, alcohol, or suicide can find healing and hope. These camps will offer a unique blend of counseling, spiritual guidance, and life skills training, all rooted in Christian principles.
Todd's faith is the bedrock of Kares Foundation. He begins each day with prayer and Bible study, asking God to lead him to individuals he can impact. While navigating the complexities of public school settings, where overt religious discussion is limited, Todd still weaves in his testimony of God's saving grace. In Christian environments, he speaks openly about forgiveness, a theme deeply personal to his own journey. He emphasizes that God is central to everything Kares does, stating, "I wouldn't be here if God wasn't in my life. And honestly, I don't know how people live without God."
His reliance on God is evident in the remarkable ways Kares Foundation has been blessed. From an attorney offering pro-bono services to the astonishingly swift approval of their 501(c)(3) status, Todd sees God's hand in every step. He leans on Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," as his guiding scripture. Todd's journey is a testament to stepping out in faith, even when the path isn't entirely clear. His advice to those hesitant to integrate their faith into their work is simple: "Pray about it, for one. And then just go for it. Start doing something. Because if you start something, God will lead you."
Todd Lingel's Kares Foundation is more than just a non-profit; it's a living testament to the transformative power of faith, forgiveness, and purpose. It's a beacon of hope, guiding young people through life's challenges and pointing them towards a future defined by God's grace.
