John's story is one of relentless pursuit – from a childhood dream of serving his country to building a successful real estate investment firm. A decorated Navy pilot, he transitioned his entrepreneurial spirit into JIDI, raising over $44 million across 32 projects and empowering hundreds of investors. Yet, beneath the surface of this impressive career, John faced a profound battle with depression and PTSD.
John openly shares the agonizing period when he hit rock bottom, unable to eat or sleep, overwhelmed by anxiety and stress. He describes it as a "dark road," a process where he constantly found himself in a cycle that took him further away from himself, and from God. This period, he now understands, was God's way of calling him back. "It's the Lord's way of telling us that we're not on the right path and that he needs us to go through that trail in order to get back on the path towards him."
His suffering was exacerbated by a prideful desire to be everything for everyone and neglecting his own well-being. "Everything took priority over me," he recalls, leading to a significant physical and mental decline. The turning point came when he finally surrendered, seeking professional help and allowing others to support him. "When I finally listened, when I finally had the people around me... that's when the Lord said, 'Okay, now you're listening to me.'"
This surrender was not a sign of weakness but a profound act of faith. It taught him the importance of mindset, boundaries, and triggers – concepts he now lives by, with the grace of newfound wisdom that only God could have shared. John emphasizes that this journey has made him a better person, instilling a deep sense of gratitude, a willingness to allow suffering for God’s strength to prevail, and a problem-solving mentality rather than a problem-avoiding one.
John's most transformative insight came from understanding suffering through a spiritual lens. "If I'm a follower of Jesus Christ, then I have to know what it's like to suffer," he asserts. He views his own struggles as a "pinprick" compared to Christ's ultimate sacrifice, a perspective that grounds him and reminds him of God's unwavering presence. This understanding allows John to embrace challenges, knowing that God uses them to shape him into the person he's meant to be.
This perspective extends to his daily life, where he cultivates gratitude for even the smallest blessings – from eggs in the fridge to meaningful relationships. He starts each day in God's presence, reflecting on three things he's grateful for, a practice that anchors him in faith and positivity.
For John, faith isn't confined to Sunday mornings; it's woven into the fabric of his professional life. While acknowledging the challenges of expressing faith in corporate environments, he champions living by one's convictions and allowing one's character to speak volumes. "People are going to see that you're different in a good way," he says, emphasizing that a genuine, loving attitude can open doors for conversations about faith.
He highlights the importance of listening, a skill he believes God emphasized by giving us "two ears and one mouth." By truly listening and bringing truth to conversations, believers can share their faith authentically without being overbearing. His core values of integrity, honesty, and transparency guide his business decisions, even when delivering difficult news to investors. This commitment to ethical conduct, even when it's challenging, is a testament to his faith in action.
A critical element of John's resilience is his commitment to godly community. He actively seeks out a "tribe" of like-minded Christian men – veterans, fathers, and business owners – who provide mutual support, share faith, and discuss life's challenges. These relationships strengthen him and reinforce his spiritual journey.
He advises others to avoid isolation, encouraging them to find a church where they feel connected and to build friendships with fellow believers. "Try not to be alone," he urges, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with people who inspire and uplift.
John offers clear, actionable advice for those seeking to integrate their faith more deeply into their lives and work:
Start with the Holy Spirit: Begin each day by inviting the Holy Spirit to be with you, trusting in His guidance.
Seek Godly Community: Surround yourself with believers who share your values and aspirations. Find a church that nourishes your spirit and build strong relationships within it.
Embrace Scripture: Keep key Bible verses in mind that ground you and offer guidance, such as Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me") and Matthew 5:16 ("Be a light so that others can see the good things that you do and give glory to your Father in heaven").
Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a daily habit of recognizing and appreciating God's blessings, big and small.
Live with Integrity: Let honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct be the hallmarks of your character, both personally and professionally.
Understand Suffering: View challenges as opportunities for God to work through you, remembering that your suffering can impact others for good.
John Rubino’s journey is a powerful reminder that true transformation often emerges from our deepest struggles. By embracing suffering, staying close to God, and building a strong community, we can not only navigate life's challenges but also become beacons of hope and influence in our workplaces and beyond.
