The Rubber Band Principle: Stretching Towards Your God-Given Purpose

Introduction: Embracing Change as True Leadership

In a world where the only constant is change, true leadership isn't about maintaining the status quo; it's about embracing transformation. As Herb Lee, founder of Right Fit Coaching and Leadership Development, profoundly states, "The only thing constant is that nothing is constant." This foundational truth, coupled with a deep understanding of our inherent design, unlocks the path to impactful leadership.

Many of us live within the confines of our comfort zones, resisting the very stretch that leads to growth. This resistance is often rooted in a fear of the unknown, a reluctance to step into the fullness of our potential. But what if we understood that we are, as Ephesians 2:10 declares, "God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do"? This verse isn't just a theological statement; it's a blueprint for our lives, a divine mandate for purposeful action.

The Law of the Rubber Band: Designed to Stretch

Herb discusses a powerful concept he calls the "Law of the Rubber Band." Imagine a rubber band. It's only useful when it's stretched. A rubber band that remains in its original, unstretched state serves no purpose. Similarly, we, as individuals created for good works, are designed to be stretched. This stretching isn't always comfortable; it often involves navigating uncertainty and pushing past perceived limitations. However, it is precisely in this tension that our true capacity is revealed and our God-given purpose is activated.

Jesus Christ serves as the ultimate example of a leader who lived fully stretched into His divine purpose. His life was a continuous act of selfless service, driven by a profound understanding of His mission. He didn't seek personal gain or popular opinion; His choices were consistently made to help others, even when it meant personal sacrifice. This unwavering commitment to purpose, even when it required direct and challenging communication, stemmed from a place of deep care. As Herb embodies, being direct isn't harsh; it's often the most caring approach when guiding someone towards their best self.

For Herb, the opinions that truly matter are those of God, his family, and his own conscience regarding how he lives his life. This internal compass, aligned with divine principles, allows him to make choices that prioritize impact over financial gain. This is the essence of transformational leadership: a commitment to serving a higher purpose, even when it demands stepping outside conventional norms.

Applying the Law of the Rubber Band

Identify Your Unstretched Areas: Where are you playing it safe? What opportunities for growth are you avoiding due to fear or comfort? This could be in your career, relationships, personal development, or spiritual walk.

Embrace the Tension: Understand that growth is rarely comfortable. The tension you feel when stepping into new challenges is a sign that you are stretching, not breaking. View it as a necessary part of your development.

Align with Your Purpose: Revisit Ephesians 2:10. What good works do you believe God has prepared for you? How can your current actions align more closely with this divine blueprint? Seek clarity through prayer, reflection, and wise counsel.

Lead with Care and Directness: Like Jesus and Herb, understand that true care sometimes requires direct communication. Don't shy away from challenging conversations if they are for the ultimate good of those you lead or serve.  Seek out opportunities to pass on the learning from your own experience:  "I want my ceiling to be your floor", Herb states.

Prioritize Impact Over Gain: Evaluate your decisions. Are they primarily driven by personal or financial gain, or by the desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others? Shift your focus towards creating lasting value.

Conclusion: Stretching Into Your Divine Purpose

The Law of the Rubber Band is an invitation to a life of dynamic purpose. It's a call to embrace the stretch, knowing that in doing so, we fulfill our divine design and unlock our full potential to build leaders and transform the world around us. As you lean into the tension, remember that you are not alone; you are fearfully and wonderfully made for this very purpose.
