David Carson's story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to purpose. From the depths of addiction and homelessness to leading a thriving tree company and a rapidly expanding ministry, his journey exemplifies what it means to build a life and business on Kingdom principles.
Carson's early life was marked by painful events and a battle with addiction that began in high school. "I made some really poor choices. Started hanging out with the wrong crowd of people," he recounts. Despite a church upbringing, he veered onto a dark path, leading to IV drug use, homelessness, and repeated stints in jail and rehab. The turning point arrived in 2016, homeless and desperate, sitting at a gas pump in Greenville. "I just started crying... I pleaded with God... 'Please help me.' I was gonna die." Days later, an arrest led him to a jail cell, where a Celebrate Recovery Bible and the guidance to read the four Gospels ignited a profound spiritual awakening. "I had absolutely nothing... but being in jail, reading that Bible, praying... I had a peace I had never felt before."
After seven months in jail, Carson entered the Miracle Hill Overcomers program, where he fully surrendered his life to Christ. "It was like the weight of a ton of bricks just lifted off me. It was incredible." This radical transformation wasn't just an emotional experience; it was the beginning of a lifelong process of change and service. While still in jail, he had written a letter to his aunt, expressing a divine calling to help other addicts using God's word – a prophecy that would soon manifest.
Upon completing the program, Carson became a ministry trainee, running transition homes. The vision for his own ministry, Sammy's Mission, began to take shape. "I'd always wanted to start transition homes," he shares, a dream that his wife, Mandi, helped bring to fruition. "One day we were sitting at the dinner table, and she was like, 'I'm tired of you talking about it, let's do it.'" They filed for 501(c)(3) status, saved diligently, and with the support of small churches, rented their first transition house. What started with one house five years ago has blossomed into seven transition houses, currently serving 42 men.
The growth of Sammy's Mission led to another leap of faith. Mandi left her medical career to run the ministry full-time, a decision that defied financial logic but affirmed their trust in God. Around the same time, Carson ventured into the tree business. A friend in recovery, who knew tree work, suggested they start a side hustle. This evolved into Carson Tree Company.
A challenging period arose when his business partner relapsed, leaving Carson, who had primarily handled sales, to navigate the tree work himself. "That was a scary moment for me," he admits. Yet, through prayer and perseverance, God provided, enabling him to acquire necessary equipment and grow the business.
Today, Carson Tree Company employs eight full-time and one part-time individual. Remarkably, every employee, except one seasoned gentleman, is a man in recovery and a follower of Christ. This intentional staffing reflects Carson's belief in integrating his business with his ministry. "Every guy that works for me walked the same dark road that I've walked in," he explains. The company operates as a ministry in itself, with a unique practice of praying in their customers' front yards and inviting the homeowners to pray with them. Many times they are invited to share their stories and testimonies.
For other Christian business owners and entrepreneurs, Carson offers straightforward, yet profound, counsel: "Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody else is looking or nobody's around... be honest." He also emphasizes the importance of prayer in decision-making and seeking godly counsel from experienced mentors. "I pray about it. And then I call on godly people for advice." Carson encouraged leaders to remain teachable.
David Carson's life is a powerful narrative of redemption and purpose. His journey from despair to leading a dual-impact enterprise—a thriving business and a life-changing ministry—serves as an inspiring example of how faith, when lived out with integrity and courage, can not only transform individual lives but also build a lasting legacy of Kingdom impact.
