In a world grappling with despair, addiction, and homelessness, the Raleigh Dream Center stands as a beacon of hope, embodying the powerful mantra: "Restoring Hope, Rebuilding Lives, Realizing Dreams." Founded in 2014 by Pastor Jeremy Porras and his wife Candace, this organization has become a vital force for transformation in their community, demonstrating how unwavering faith can fuel profound societal impact.
The genesis of the Raleigh Dream Center is a testament to divine conviction. Pastor Jeremy, then a worship pastor, encountered a woman facing imminent homelessness. His initial, well-intentioned advice of faith and provision was quickly followed by a profound realization: he lacked the practical tools to help. This moment ignited a prayer for open eyes, a prayer that God answered by revealing the immense need around him and drawing his attention to the successful model of the Los Angeles Dream Center.
Inspired by the comprehensive approach of its Los Angeles counterpart, the Raleigh Dream Center began its journey with a simple yet powerful initiative: "Adopt a Block." This program involves consistent, loving service to local apartment complexes and neighborhoods, starting with grocery ministry. What began in one community 12 years ago has expanded to 36 communities, consistently providing free groceries, engaging children with games, and sharing the gospel. This consistent presence has been a catalyst for significant transformation, proving that sustained love and practical support can change lives.
Beyond food ministry, the Raleigh Dream Center extends its reach through a robust homeless and street outreach program every Tuesday. Buses and vans transport individuals from the streets to the Dream Center, where they receive a hot meal, participate in worship and Bible study, and access clothing. This initiative is more than just providing necessities; it's about building relationships and planting seeds of hope in challenging situations.
Perhaps one of the most impactful programs is their addiction recovery initiative. With 21 beds across men's and women's houses, the Dream Center offers a free, year-long residential program centered on the belief that the gospel of Jesus Christ can set individuals free from addiction. Pastor Jeremy proudly shares stories of graduates, tangible proof of lives rebuilt and dreams rekindled. He emphasizes that when caught in addiction or trauma, people often lose their ability to dream. But through encountering Jesus, those forgotten dreams are revitalized and brought to fruition.
Pastor Jeremy credits his wife with coining the powerful mission statement: "Restoring Hope, Rebuilding Lives, Realizing Dreams." He explains the intentional progression: hope is the crucial first step for those who feel lost. A simple act, like offering a water bottle during street outreach, can be an excuse for a conversation, planting that initial seed of hope. From there, the residential program focuses on rebuilding lives by instilling disciplines rooted in the foundation of Jesus Christ. This rebuilding then paves the way for dreams to be realized, as Pastor Jeremy firmly believes that with God's will, no door remains closed, regardless of one's past.
For Christian business leaders, Pastor Jeremy offers profound insights into integrating faith with business decisions. He shares a current example of wrestling with a multi-million dollar decision to open a thrift store to fund the ministry. His approach involves fervent prayer and seeking counsel from godly men and women, recognizing that these are not just business decisions but spiritual ones. He highlights the importance of humility and seeking wise counsel, drawing from past experiences where independent decisions led to setbacks.
He also shares a compelling anecdote about the president of Roebuck Homes, a local builder who, after volunteering at the Dream Center's Adopt a Block program, felt convicted to integrate the gospel into his business practices. This leader realized the importance of discussing faith with vendors and clients, demonstrating how serving in ministry can profoundly impact one's approach to business. This example underscores the idea that Kingdom-minded businesses can be powerful agents of change.
On a personal level, Pastor Jeremy emphasizes that his faith shapes most of his life, particularly in his commitment to daily scripture reading and quiet time with the Lord. He believes that finding fulfillment in Jesus allows him to bring a "fulfilled man" to his marriage, workplace, and parenting, preventing the pitfalls of seeking fulfillment in external sources. This discipline, cultivated over the past five to seven years, has transformed his daily walk and decision-making.
Finally, Pastor Jeremy encourages Christian businesses to consider how God is challenging them to use their blessings for the Kingdom.
This support not only provides practical resources but also offers immense encouragement to frontline workers, reminding them that their efforts are valued and supported. The synergy between Kingdom-minded businesses and ministries creates a powerful force for good, accelerating transformation and inspiring continued dedication to the work of God.
