Tristan Murray's journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of surrender—not as an act of defeat, but as a gateway to discovering one's true purpose and living a life deeply aligned with faith. From the soccer field to the financial world, and through profound personal experiences, Tristan's story illuminates how embracing a surrendered life can redefine success, leadership, and even the impossible.
For Tristan, soccer was more than a sport; it was an idol, a lifelong pursuit that began at 10 months old. A scholar-athlete with a full scholarship to James Madison University, his identity was inextricably linked to the game. He even bore a tattoo, 'born footballer,' a testament to his unwavering dedication. Yet, as his collegiate career neared its end and professional dreams faced uncertainty, a deeper question began to stir within him: 'Why am I here?'
Tristan realized that his purpose couldn't be something he could retire from. "You can never retire from your purpose. Your purpose cannot be to play soccer because you cannot play soccer forever," he reflects. This profound insight sparked a quest for meaning that led him not to a new career path initially, but to a spiritual awakening. Though not raised in a devout Christian household, an innate acknowledgment of God propelled him to seek answers in the Word. He began devouring scripture, not yet a believer, but with an open heart. "I thought I was reading the Word, but I didn't realize the Word was reading me," he shares. This intense study led to an irresistible encounter with God, culminating in a complete surrender of his life to Christ at 24, laying down his lifelong dream of professional soccer.
Tristan's surrendered life profoundly shapes his daily operations as a financial advisor. He rejects the compartmentalization of faith and life, viewing every role—father, husband, professional—as an opportunity to experience God. "Faith is not something we do," he explains, but an intrinsic part of his identity as a son of God. His foundation is the Word, which he sees as his 'Papa's' love letter and instructions, guiding his actions and decisions.
This faith-driven approach was dramatically illustrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a successful personal training director, the gym closures presented a significant challenge. However, through his wife's prayers and a clear vision, Tristan received divine guidance to transition into the financial industry—a calling he had long felt but struggled to pursue. He diligently studied, obtained his licenses, and when the world reopened, he stepped into his new career, a testament to trusting God's timing and direction.
Beyond career shifts, Tristan's faith has been a conduit for miracles. While working at LA Fitness, he fostered an environment where Bible studies spontaneously emerged at his desk, leading several colleagues to Christ. In one powerful instance, the Holy Spirit impressed upon him to confront an employee who was planning an abortion with his girlfriend. Tristan's direct, faith-filled intervention saved a life. "If God never showed me that he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant, his daughter, who is now, I think, between 10 and 12, would never have existed," he recounts, highlighting the profound impact of divine intervention in the marketplace.
Tristan's faith dictates where he invests his time, talent, and resources. He emphasizes that time is a non-renewable resource, and true treasure lies in the Kingdom of God. Reflecting on the scripture, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also," he challenges the common misconception that our heart dictates our investment. Instead, he asserts that our heart follows where we invest our treasure. This principle guides his family's commitment to generosity and their intentional investment in Kingdom pursuits.
His personal word for 2026 is 'surrender.' He acknowledges that even with a clear calling, the human tendency is to try and fulfill it in our own strength or according to our own preconceived notions. "I don't want to be like Abraham and birth Ishmael," he states, referring to Abraham's attempt to help God fulfill His promise, which led to complications. Tristan desires 'Isaacs'—divinely appointed outcomes—and is committed to laying down his own ideas and plans at God's feet. This deep level of surrender extends to his family life, where he purposefully invests his time, attention, and affection, rejecting the world's definition of success that often sacrifices family for career.
Perhaps the most profound testament to Tristan's unwavering faith is the miraculous story of his firstborn son, Gennao Anothen, meaning 'born from above.' In 2016, Tristan and his wife, Shereka, received a prophetic word that their first child would be a boy, and that his name would signify his divine origin. In 2017, Shereka became pregnant, but at three months, she began to hemorrhage. Ultrasounds and blood tests confirmed a miscarriage, and doctors even scheduled a D&C procedure.
However, Tristan and Shereka stood firm on God's Word, which promises no barrenness or miscarriages. They called their spiritual parents for prayer, believing that God's report superseded any medical diagnosis. Their faith was rewarded: their son, who was declared dead, was born and just celebrated his eighth birthday. This incredible story underscores the power of believing in the impossible and trusting in the Chief Physician.
Tristan's ultimate advice for other Christian leaders is simple yet profound: "Recognize that you're a son first. Everything else is after." He warns against deriving identity from accomplishments, as failure can then lead to a loss of self. Our identity, he emphasizes, must be rooted in our eternal reality in Christ, whose love is a gift, not a reward based on performance.
Tristan Murray's life is a living sermon on the power of surrender. It's a call to leaders to shed the burden of self-reliance, embrace their identity as beloved children of God, and allow His divine guidance to transform every facet of their lives—from the boardroom to the home, and beyond the limits of human understanding. His journey inspires us to seek a deeper, more surrendered walk, where true purpose is found not in what we achieve, but in who we are in Him.
