In a world increasingly driven by fleeting trends and superficial metrics, the story of Tom Pruett, an IT security consultant from Kansas City, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith-driven leadership. Tom's journey, marked by global experience and a steadfast commitment to his values, offers profound insights into how personal conviction can shape professional integrity and create lasting impact.
Tom's day begins not with emails or market reports, but with daily Mass at 6:40 AM. This ritual, a practice inherited from his father, grounds him. “That starts my day out always remembering who I am, where I come from, and where Christ is in my life,” he shares. This spiritual foundation isn't confined to his personal hours; it's the bedrock of his professional conduct. He strives to extend compassion and understanding to colleagues and clients, recognizing that everyone faces personal challenges. “I try to reach out,” he explains, “remembering that, you know, just kind of like Christ, you share what you have with others.” This ethos translates into a business practice built on honesty and keeping one’s word, a principle he believes is more crucial than ever in today’s complex world.
Tom’s commitment to integrity was put to the test four years ago while consulting for a hospital in the Kansas City area. Tasked with presenting security risks to the board, he found himself at odds with the CIO, who wanted him to downplay certain issues. "I was asked to not be as truthful as I'm supposed to do in my job," Tom recalls. Faced with a choice between professional expediency and personal conviction, he chose the latter. “I told them what I professionally thought,” he states. The consequence was a parting of ways with the hospital, a decision that initially caused upset but ultimately affirmed his wife's wisdom: “You had to do what you have to do, which is be honest.”
This experience reinforced his belief that true success isn't measured by immediate gain, but by the peace of mind that comes from aligning actions with faith. “It cost me part of my livelihood,” he admits, “but I knew if I believed in the Lord and I did what was right, I went to work for another company for two years.” This unwavering commitment to integrity, even when costly, highlights a core tenet of his faith-driven approach: long-term blessings often follow short-term sacrifices.
Generosity, for Tom, is a natural extension of his faith. Beyond regular tithing and contributions to Catholic Charities, he actively seeks opportunities to serve. He recently spent a day helping a friend move furniture for international students in need, a spontaneous act of service driven by the simple desire to help. “I didn't have to, but I just felt, go help somebody else,” he explains.
His commitment also extends to community involvement, serving on a board for children’s safety in Kansas City. This charity supports initiatives like after-school programs for underprivileged children, an endeavor he shares with public figures like Travis Kelce, who also quietly champions such causes. For Tom, giving back isn't just about financial contributions; it's about dedicating time and talent to uplift others, embodying the principle that true wealth lies in what you give.
When asked how he encourages other Christian business leaders, Tom emphasizes leading by example. “I think through example. I think that’s the only way I can do it,” he asserts. He believes that living a life of integrity, as a good husband, father, and community member, naturally reflects one's faith in the business world. He doesn't preach or proselytize; instead, he lets his actions speak for themselves.
“I don’t talk about my faith… But what I do try to do is show them, you know, what a good husband does, a good father, and the examples that were set to me by my father.” This quiet yet powerful approach demonstrates that authentic faith is lived, not just declared, and its impact resonates far beyond words.
Tom's personal testimony of Christ's blessings centers on his family—his wife and daughter—whom he considers his greatest gifts. He also acknowledges the blessings of his career opportunities and the support of his friends. Even through health challenges, his faith has been a constant source of strength. For Tom, the peace that comes from living according to Christ’s teachings is invaluable. “It is easier for me to sleep at night and to live my life by what Jesus teaches us,” he shares.
He understands human fallibility but trusts in divine forgiveness, believing that even when good deeds go unnoticed or seem to yield no immediate reward, they ultimately prove to be the right path. “It always comes back around that it was the right thing to do. And you will feel better living your life.” Tom Pruett’s journey is a powerful reminder that integrating faith into business is not just about ethics; it’s about cultivating a life of purpose, integrity, and profound impact.
