In a world often driven by worldly success, Dr. LaTarsha Holden stands as a beacon of faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to Kingdom principles. Her journey, marked by profound challenges and extraordinary triumphs, offers a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith in both personal life and business.
Dr. Holden's story begins in the harsh reality of homelessness. At 35, with six children and only a GED, she found herself in a boarded-up house in Atlanta. This wasn't the end of her story, but the crucible in which her leadership and faith were forged. "It was at that point I decided to fight for my family's liberation," she recalls. This decision ignited a 15-year journey that saw her rise from homelessness to running for city council, earning a doctorate in leadership studies, publishing nearly 20 books (including a Christian comic book), and becoming a certified peer specialist in mental health and anger management. Her mission now is to inspire others to "rewrite their story."
For Dr. Holden, an ordained minister, faith isn't just a part of her life; it is her life, permeating every aspect of her leadership and business endeavors. She views every opportunity, every role, as an "assignment" from God. "Anything I do, whether I'm writing a book, running for council, whatever I do in my journey, in my assignments... everything to me is an assignment," she explains. This perspective allows her to approach every task with a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to serving others.
Her core values of kindness and compassion are the bedrock of her approach. As a mental health specialist, she understands the unseen struggles people face. "We don't know what people go through," she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of leading with empathy. Her leadership is also deeply rooted in personal development, a principle she champions in her book, Leadership Principles: The Power of Personal Development. She believes that true growth in any area, especially business, cannot surpass the growth of one's mind.
Dr. Holden's faith has been the guiding force in critical decisions, particularly when faced with opportunities that challenged her integrity. During her 2017 city council campaign, she encountered propositions to compromise her values for political gain. "I was propositioned a couple times to get acquainted with people if I want to make connections and rub hands," she shares. Her response was resolute: "If God brought me this far, I'm not going to trade in what he's done for me to get ahead, whether I win the race or not. I ran a fair race. I stood on my principal morals while I was running without having to sell myself out to get ahead."
This commitment to integrity was not just a political stance; it was a reflection of a deeper principle forged in her most vulnerable moments. She asserts, "As a leader, you're tested the most at your most vulnerable moment." During her homelessness, she refused to compromise her values to escape her situation, choosing instead to rebuild her life "brick by brick." Her children witnessed this unwavering commitment, with her son, a Marine veteran, affirming, "You walk the walk and just didn't talk the talk." This powerful example underscores the profound impact of living out one's faith authentically, especially when it seems to defy conventional worldly wisdom.
Dr. Holden's faith profoundly influences how she allocates her time, talent, and treasure. She believes in "running my own lane," focusing on her unique gifts of love, compassion, kindness, and service. Her assignments, whether community advocacy, outreach programs, or writing, all align with her desire to give back. "Everything is always, how can I serve? How can I give back?" she states.
She emphasizes chasing purpose over perfection and avoiding the temptation of "microwavable success." Her journey taught her the art of discipline, understanding that true elevation often involves years of preparation and isolation. "If you can cultivate the art of discipline, that's half of the battle," she advises, echoing the importance of consistency and obedience in one's walk with God.
To other Christian business leaders, Dr. Holden offers a profound challenge: your business should be a direct reflection of your faith. "If you are really trying to make a difference and God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the head of your life, your business will reflect that. Your values, your mission statement," she asserts. She reminds leaders that "you are your brand," not just what's seen on social media, but the person behind closed doors.
Her ultimate message is a powerful reminder of eternal perspective: "When you are gone, you will not be remembered by your sales. You will not be remembered by how big you grew your business, your revenue. You'll be remembered by how your company treated customers, how you treated your employees and what you stood for as an example for those that's come behind you." She concludes with the sobering truth that while earthly possessions lose their value, "what we do for God is the only thing that we have eternal value."
Dr. LaTarsha Holden's life and work exemplify transformational leadership rooted in faith. Her story is a powerful call to Christian entrepreneurs to lead with integrity, serve with compassion, and build businesses that leave a lasting legacy of Kingdom impact.
