God's Masterpiece: Angela Shope's Journey of Trust and Transformation

Listen to this article

Angela Shope, Executive Director at the Neighborhood Christian Clinic in Phoenix, AZ, embodies a profound journey of faith, leadership, and unwavering trust in God's divine plan. Her story is a testament to Ephesians 2:10, a verse that became her guiding light: “For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Angela’s current role at the Neighborhood Christian Clinic perfectly aligns with her lifelong passion for serving the marginalized. The clinic provides low-cost medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare to the uninsured and underserved, offering a holistic approach that addresses both physical and spiritual needs. Angela highlights the clinic's mission, echoing Jesus's example of first addressing physical pain before ministering to the spirit. Every patient has the opportunity to hear the gospel and receive prayer, a testament to the clinic's commitment to 'whole person care.'

Seasons of Trust: Stepping Out in Faith

Before joining the clinic, Angela served as Senior Director of Development Operations at Food for the Hungry, a large international development and relief organization. Her departure from this 'dream job' was a pivotal moment of trust. In September 2023, while in Cambodia, she felt God stirring in her heart about 'necessary endings.' Despite her deep love for the mission and her teams, she sensed God was leading her in a new direction. This period coincided with the passing of her mother, adding another layer of grief and transition.

Angela's journey to the Neighborhood Christian Clinic was far from conventional. She initially applied for the Executive Director role but was not selected. However, a few months later, the recruiter called her back. The person initially hired had rescinded their acceptance, opening the door for Angela. This wasn't the first time God had orchestrated such a turn of events in her career. A similar situation occurred at Food for the Hungry, where she applied for a supervisor role, didn't get it, but was later offered the position when the initial hire backed out. In both instances, Angela's obedience to God, even when it meant taking a pay cut or a perceived step down, led to significant promotions and impact.

Lessons in Holding Things Loosely

These experiences solidified her belief in holding things loosely, understanding that God's plans often unfold in unexpected ways. As she wisely states, “The harder you hold on to something, the more it hurts when God asks you to let it go.” Her career trajectory, from an administrative assistant at General Motors to a senior director, reveals a consistent thread of God's hand guiding her every step.

Angela's faith is the bedrock of her daily leadership. She emphasizes inviting God into every conversation, meeting, and decision. Transparency and vulnerability are key aspects of her leadership style, as she openly shares her own struggles and growth with her team.

Servant Leadership and God’s Provision

She is deeply passionate about supporting her staff, viewing her role as one of servant leadership. This was powerfully demonstrated when she advocated for better compensation for her team. A major donor, after praying, was moved by the verse “The worker is worthy of his wages” and donated $200,000, enabling the clinic to provide merit increases and create new positions. This not only met but exceeded their year-end fundraising goal, a clear testament to God's provision.

For other Christian business leaders, Angela offers profound advice: “Just trust God.” She encourages leaders to lean into Ephesians 2:10, especially during difficult times. Waiting on God, she explains, intertwines and strengthens one's connection with Him. While challenges may not feel good in the moment, hindsight often reveals God's constant presence and preparation. Growth, she reminds us, often happens during the storms, not just in the good times. Her life is a living example of this truth, demonstrating that when we surrender our plans and trust in God's masterpiece, He will lead us to the good works He has prepared for us.
