In a world often characterized by the stark separation of the secular and the sacred, Dan LaRock, a Senior Vice President and Shareholder at HUB International and co-founder of Rock Ranch, offers a refreshing perspective: there is no distinction. For LaRock, faith isn't a compartmentalized aspect of life but the very foundation upon which all success, leadership, and personal fulfillment are built.
LaRock, a self-proclaimed believer in Jesus Christ, a husband, and a father, navigates the complexities of the corporate world with unwavering transparency about his faith. Working with hundreds of employer groups across a six-state region, assisting them with multi-million dollar employee benefit investments, LaRock ensures that those who hire him definitively know who he serves and in what order. This bold integration of faith into his professional life stems from a deep understanding of his story and a profound gratitude for divine intervention. He believes that no problem is too big for his faith, enabling him to approach challenges with a sense of peace and purpose.
This integrated approach extends beyond client interactions to his team members. As a mentor, LaRock guides younger professionals, emphasizing that while success is important, the ultimate goal is to become "successors of the kingdom." He aims to show that a strong belief system doesn't hinder success but enhances it, enabling individuals to navigate business, marriage, and life with greater effectiveness.
LaRock’s ability to maintain this integrated life amidst a demanding schedule is rooted in a disciplined morning routine. For the past 15 years, he has intentionally guarded his early mornings, typically from 5:30 to 6:30 AM, for time in the Word. Having read the Bible cover-to-cover multiple times, he immerses himself in scripture, allowing it to shape his thoughts and actions. This daily practice, coupled with reading multiple books, mostly nonfiction, provides a rich source of invitation and reflection, quieting the noise of the world and fostering stillness—a concept his wife, a co-worker at Rock Ranch, emphasizes as crucial for hearing divine guidance.
This commitment to spiritual grounding has tangible impacts on his leadership. LaRock recalls a challenging situation involving a highly talented but difficult associate who also experienced a moral failing. Despite the frustration and the difficulty of making tough decisions to preserve company culture, LaRock found peace and clarity by stepping away and aligning his head and heart posture with scriptural truth. This allowed him to make the right, albeit hard, calls, demonstrating that even in complex corporate scenarios, faith provides an unshakeable compass.
When it comes to allocating his time, treasure, and talent, LaRock admits he needs to improve at saying no. However, his "yes" typically gravitates towards human needs and relational opportunities. He prioritizes mentorship, board service for mission-driven organizations, and personal support for friends facing life’s challenges. He sees the Holy Spirit's best work come alive via connections between people, and he strives to be an instrument of truth and support, even in conversations that extend beyond typical social norms.
LaRock’s ultimate advice for anyone seeking to live a life of purpose and impact can be summarized in one word: "Go." He urges individuals, particularly Christians, to be bold and actively embody the change they wish to see in the world. "Send me, Lord," he proclaims, encouraging believers to move beyond the comfort of their fellowship walls and extend truth, forgiveness, and genuine relationships to those outside. He acknowledges that mistakes will be made, but these very imperfections can create authentic connections, fostering understanding and shared humanity. In essence, LaRock’s message is a powerful call to action: don't just wish for a better world; go and be the transformation.
