Beyond the Bottom Line: How Faith Transforms Business and Leadership

Listen to this article

In a world often driven by profit and personal gain, Key McKay, a business development consultant and coach with Key McKay Business & Leadership Development, offers a refreshing perspective on leadership and entrepreneurship. For Key, faith isn't just a personal belief; it's the bedrock of her business decisions, shaping every interaction and investment.

Key's journey into faith-driven business leadership wasn't a linear path. Growing up, she had a foundation of Christian beliefs, but it wasn't until she met her husband that her faith truly took root. "He was the first person I can say that I saw exercise the love of God, opposed to preach the love of God," Key shares. This profound example of living out one's faith became a catalyst for her own transformation.

This conviction was tested early in her entrepreneurial journey. After a failed shoe store venture, Key found herself wrestling with a powerful scripture: "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and suffers the loss of his soul?" This verse became her unwavering baseline. "Every time I'm going to make a decision about business, leadership, even in my personal life, like what is it going to cost me? Is this going to cost me my soul? Is it going to cost someone else's soul? Because it's not worth it."

This principle guided her through a pivotal moment when a potential consulting client, a therapist working with abused women in business, revealed a spiritual grounding that diverged from Key's Christian beliefs. Despite the appealing opportunity, Key had to draw a clear boundary. "I can't support this because what you're asking me to do is to go against my, this is how I'll do right," she explains. This experience solidified her commitment to being abundantly clear about her faith, recognizing that opportunities can often appeal to the flesh, and discernment is crucial to avoid compromising one's salvation.

Key's faith also dictates how she invests her time, talent, and resources. She views tithing not just as a monetary act, but as a holistic commitment. "I'm not going to start the day if I don't first give that time to God, because if I start today without giving time to God, that means I have robbed God," she states. This daily discipline sets the tone for her work, ensuring that her actions align with her values.

Beyond personal devotion, Key actively gives back to the community. For years, she has mentored micro-business owners through the MicroMentor platform, offering her expertise to those who might not otherwise afford her services. "I understand I've once been there, and in many places I'm still there," she reflects, emphasizing the importance of practical, compassionate support.

Advice for Christian Business Leaders

For Christian business leaders, Key offers two profound pieces of advice:

  1. "In all of your getting, get understanding. In all your getting, get wisdom. And if it costs you all you got, get understanding." Key stresses the importance of investing in personal growth and wisdom, not just business automation. She believes that mentors, advisors, coaches, and authors are gifts from God, through whom He speaks and works.
  2. "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and suffers the loss of his soul?" This foundational scripture reminds leaders to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly success. Key shares a powerful example from her Airbnb and Vrbo hosting business. Despite initial concerns about offending guests, she and her husband decided to fill their properties with Bibles and Christian books. This decision, to "put God over profit," transformed their properties into a ministry in themselves, attracting guests seeking spiritual retreat and connection.

Key McKay's approach to business and leadership is a testament to the transformative power of faith. By prioritizing spiritual principles, she not only achieves professional success but also creates a lasting impact, demonstrating that true prosperity lies in aligning one's work with a higher purpose.
