Good afternoon, good evening, good morning. Whatever time you're reading or listening to this, I'm honored to share insights from an incredible conversation with Leonard Sowell, a top business leader and founder in the DFW logistics market. Leonard, a long-term friend and a phenomenal young man I've had the privilege to coach, has grown beyond leaps and bounds. He is one of the founders of Haulix Moving and Storage, a company built on five pillars: mini moves, handyman services, junk removal and donations, and furniture delivery. As the operations manager, Leonard handles logistics, job acquisition, and ensuring his team's seamless execution.
When asked how he intentionally lives out his faith in his day-to-day leadership and operations, Leonard shared a profound perspective: he sees God in the details of every job, from inception to completion. His approach to leadership is rooted in steadfastness, integration, and adaptability. He actively seeks counsel from God-fearing men and women through podcasts, videos, reading, studying, and meditation. This continuous mental and spiritual engagement allows him to view challenges through a different lens, leading to better decision-making, even when the team might doubt a solution's viability. For Leonard, faith isn't just a personal belief; it's an active force guiding every business decision.
Leonard recounted a pivotal moment in 2024 when he found himself at a crossroads, questioning the future of his growing business. In that moment, he asked God for only two things: wisdom and godly, Kingdom-minded relationships. He cautions, “You got to be careful what you ask God because he’ll give it to you one way or another.” This prayer led to a series of counter-cultural business decisions. Instead of focusing solely on financial capital, God revealed the true value of partnerships. Leonard reached out to three individuals he had met randomly through work, and these relationships became instrumental. Through these partnerships, Haulix acquired a warehouse, secured necessary equipment (realizing that a tow-capable vehicle was more valuable than a large box truck), implemented advanced systems and AI, hired key personnel, and landed significant business accounts and contracts. This experience taught him to go against the worldly grain, listen to God, and be adaptable, leading to unexpected layers of growth and success.
Leonard’s faith profoundly influences his generosity of time, talent, and treasure. He references James 2:14-26, emphasizing that “faith without works is dead,” and Matthew 25:14-30, the parable of the talents, which teaches that God expects us to multiply our skills, resources, and gifts, not bury them. For Leonard, every business endeavor is an opportunity to build the Kingdom, provide for his family, and serve the community. His generosity stems from a deeply ingrained belief in First Corinthians chapter 13, which defines love as the strongest force. He strives to lead with a loving heart, coupled with faith and diligent work, sowing seeds of love and service into others, especially when building the Kingdom or strengthening families.
Leonard offers powerful encouragement to other Christian business leaders. He stresses the importance of establishing a strong value and belief system—one so robust that it remains uncompromised, even in the face of adversity. This system, prioritizing God, family, and then business, provides a compass for navigating challenges. He urges leaders to set ambitious goals, never stop dreaming, and believe in the visions God has given them. He also highlights the importance of being mindful of what you ask God for and being prepared for the answer. Just as asking for patience might lead to trials that build resilience, asking for wisdom can lead to complex situations that demand divine guidance. He advises leaders to embrace change, pivot when necessary, and recognize that past experiences shape who they are. Leonard firmly believes that there are no coincidences; every up and down is divinely orchestrated, and the best is always yet to come.
Leonard shared a deeply personal testimony of God’s grace during a storm in 2022. While in the middle of a job, he felt an inexplicable urge to visit his parents, who lived nearby. Despite running late and needing to pick up a team member, he made a detour to see them. Shortly after leaving his parents, he received a frantic call from his aunt: his father was unresponsive. His father passed away soon after. In the midst of this profound grief, Leonard witnessed God’s grace. His team, understanding his distress, continued the job without question, demonstrating the strong foundation he had built. This experience revealed that even in the darkest moments, God orchestrates support and shows the impact of a life lived with purpose. A long-term customer later complimented his team, saying, “I know you guys can do it because I know where you guys are leading from. Leonard doesn’t give up.” This moment underscored that even when we don't see it, others recognize the divine influence and unwavering spirit guiding our actions. Leonard’s journey is a powerful testament to how faith, when integrated into every aspect of life and business, can transform challenges into opportunities for growth, impact, and a deeper understanding of God’s unwavering goodness.
