Rob Murphy, co-founder of Vervic, a thriving HR and recruiting firm, embodies a leadership philosophy where faith isn't just a personal belief, but the bedrock of his business. For Murphy, entrepreneurship is a calling to glorify God through his work, impacting not only his family but also his employees and the broader community.
Murphy's journey into entrepreneurship began in 2020 with a leap of faith into the unknown world of recruiting. With no prior experience, he partnered with a seasoned recruiter and a business expert, forming a team that has since grown to include eight more individuals. This year, Vervic merged with Passion HR, founded by Mike Bean, a fellow Christian business owner. This strategic partnership created a comprehensive HR solution, offering direct hire recruiting, temporary staffing, and a full spectrum of HR services, from crafting job descriptions to serving as interim HR managers for large corporations.
At the heart of Murphy's leadership is an unwavering belief in God's provision. He candidly shares the initial struggles of carrying the weight of his employees' financial well-being, a burden that led to undue stress and sometimes misguided decisions. Through this, God revealed a profound truth: His provision for families, including those of his employees, is not dependent on Murphy's efforts or success. This realization brought immense peace and a more focused approach to his work. “God doesn't need my help providing for my family,” Murphy states, “My purpose of doing good works is just to glorify God and live the way that he tells me to live. And he's the one who takes care of my family and the families of the people in my company.” This principle also guided him in making difficult staffing decisions, understanding that God’s plan often leads individuals to better-suited opportunities.
Murphy's faith is visibly woven into the fabric of Vervic's culture. Every Monday meeting begins with prayer, and a mid-week optional prayer request call is offered to all employees. He also regularly shares faith-related content on LinkedIn, challenging the notion that work and faith should be separate. “Your work is just as much a part of your walk with the Lord as any other part of your life,” he emphasizes, encouraging others to integrate their faith into their professional lives.
Looking back, Murphy offers invaluable advice to his younger self, starting with the importance of internships and real-world work experience. He stresses that understanding different work environments is crucial before committing to a career path. He also shares a mentor's wisdom on wealth creation: success often comes from obtaining a specialized degree, starting a business, or excelling in sales. However, he cautions against blindly following passion, citing his own experience with basketball. While passionate about the sport, he realized a career in coaching might not align with his desire for a stable family life. Instead, he found a way to enjoy basketball while building a successful business.
Murphy recounts a powerful story of a pastor who, despite his passion for ministry, found his true calling in business, using his financial success to advance God's kingdom. This story underscores Murphy's core message: ask God for direction in your career. “If you don't feel like you have a clear leading from the Lord on what's next, just do what seems like the next best step, the next best one thing that makes sense until he tells you something else,” he advises.
Ultimately, Rob Murphy's journey is a testament to the transformative power of living out one's faith in the marketplace. He believes that adhering to biblical principles leads to a fulfilling and successful life, both personally and professionally. His commitment to integrating faith and business serves as an inspiring example for leaders seeking to make a difference in their spheres of influence.
