In a world often driven by profit and performance, Joseph Hudnall, Vice President of Client Services at Hussle Sports and Entertainment, stands as a testament to the power of integrating faith into business. With over 30 years of friendship with interviewer Aundre Blasingame, Hudnall shares his journey of building a company that prioritizes people, purpose, and spiritual principles.
Hussle Sports and Entertainment, co-founded with a vision to combine the sports world with spiritual and family values, aims to nurture the holistic development of athletes. "We want to make sure that not only are they advancing in their athletic careers, but they're also advancing in their academic careers, in their personal space," Hudnall explains. This includes mental health, financial growth, and spiritual well-being, ensuring athletes are not solely defined by their performance.
Hudnall's commitment to faith begins each day with devotional time, ensuring his actions reflect his values. "I want everything that I do within that day to always reflect whose I am and who I represent," he states. This intentionality extends to his team's interactions with athletes, recognizing that genuine care fosters deeper connections. "People will listen more to what you say when they know that you care about them," he emphasizes. In an industry where athletes are often seen as commodities, Hussle Sports and Entertainment strives to be "the hands and feet of Jesus," creating a safe space for growth and support rooted in spiritual principles.
One of the most powerful examples of Hudnall's faith-driven leadership involved a high-profile athlete. Despite the potential for significant financial gain, the athlete's mindset and values were contradictory to the company's core beliefs. Hudnall made the difficult decision to decline partnership, prioritizing integrity over profit. "Everything that's profitable is not good. All money ain't good money," he wisely notes. This decision, though challenging, underscored the company's unwavering commitment to its spiritual foundation, leaving a lasting impression and a "lifeline open" for the athlete's future.
Hudnall's faith also dictates where and how he invests his time, talent, and treasure. He prioritizes individuals with strong character, coachability, and a growth mindset, even if they aren't five-star athletes. "Because of their willingness and their openness and their character that they display at all times, it makes it worth investing into them," he explains. Hussle Sports and Entertainment also hosts athletic camps for underprivileged children, integrating sports, life skills, and spiritual principles, always opening and closing with prayer. This approach ensures that every endeavor impacts the Kingdom, fostering growth beyond the playing field.
Hudnall's advice to other Christian business leaders is simple yet profound: "Do it afraid." He challenges the notion that a God-given vision should be without fear. "If God is telling me to step out on something, usually it's going to be something that I can't see the provision or I can't see the ability for me to be able to do," he says. This fear, he argues, is an invitation to depend on God, not a reason to retreat. He encourages leaders to view challenges as "learning curves, not failures," trusting that God will not let them fail in a vision He has given.
Hudnall shares a personal testimony of being unexpectedly terminated from a long-term position. This period of unemployment, though initially fueled by pride, became a humbling journey back to dependence on God. He realized he had become too comfortable in his own abilities, neglecting his spiritual disciplines. "God was just like, at some point you're gonna remember where your provision comes from," he recalls. Through this test, he learned to prioritize his relationship with God, ultimately leading him to a new position with greater purpose and increased provision. This experience, he believes, prepared him for the intentional, faith-driven work he now does at Hussle Sports and Entertainment.
Joseph Hudnall's story is a powerful reminder that business can be a platform for spiritual impact, where values guide decisions, and faith transforms challenges into opportunities for growth and testimony. Hussle Sports and Entertainment, with its commitment to sports, family, and God, exemplifies a model of purpose-driven leadership that extends far "beyond the game."
