In a world often driven by cutthroat business practices, Emily Bopp, Chief of Staff at Empowered Ventures, offers a refreshing and deeply impactful perspective on leadership and enterprise. Her journey, rooted in a profound understanding of faith, has led her to a professional home where Christian values are not just espoused but are the very foundation of the business model.
Empowered Ventures stands apart from traditional holding companies. It's 100% employee-owned, a structure that Emily passionately describes as correcting some of the "ills of capitalism." When Empowered Ventures acquires a business, all employees of that business join a single, diversified ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). This model, Emily explains, "decentralizes the wealth building in a way that it should be," offering every employee the opportunity to build real wealth.
For Emily, this isn't just a smart business strategy; it's a direct manifestation of her faith. "I love this model because it decentralizes the wealth building in a way that it should be. I feel like it's a model that is correcting some of the ills of capitalism by really empowering all of the employees to build real wealth or give them the opportunity to build real wealth." This commitment to shared prosperity aligns perfectly with her evolving spiritual understanding.
Emily's faith journey has transformed her perception of humanity and business. Twenty years ago, she admits to a more separated view, categorizing people into 'believers' and 'everyone else.' Today, her faith is rooted in Jesus' shared humanity, leading her to see a fundamental unity among all people. "My faith is really rooted in Jesus shared humanity with us... I love seeing all humans through that light." This perspective dissolves hierarchical thinking and fosters a deep sense of equality, where every individual possesses inherent dignity.
This shift profoundly impacts her leadership. When faced with business decisions, Emily's faith guides her away from purely efficient or profitable choices that might come at the expense of individuals. While acknowledging the need for business viability, her orientation is always towards valuing human dignity. "An orientation toward valuing everyone's human dignity leads to micro decisions all over the place inside my role and in any role of leadership where there is a coming alongside and helping of the individuals that were leading and influencing the environments where we find ourselves, rather than just a cold sort of parsing of that talent."
Generosity, for Emily, is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of her life. Her professional role at Empowered Ventures is a direct extension of her calling. The company's purpose—"to create life-changing financial and personal well-being outcomes for all of our employee owners"—resonates deeply with her Christian values. "It's very much a giving orientation. Even just the business model that I find myself in, which is why I told you before we started recording this call that they'll have to kick me out like I found my professional home because the model is so fundamentally aligned with my Christian values."
Emily's advice to other Christian business leaders is to embrace this fundamental unity. She cautions against a mindset that separates believers from non-believers, arguing that such a stance can be counterproductive. "Anything that inserts a spirit of separateness is bound to bring about outcomes that we didn't intend." Instead, she encourages leaders to lean into the vision of unity in Christ, recognizing that this is a "truer truth" than any perceived differences.
Emily Bopp's leadership at Empowered Ventures is a powerful testament to how faith can transform business. By prioritizing human dignity, fostering shared ownership, and embracing a spirit of unity, she demonstrates that success in the marketplace can go hand-in-hand with profound spiritual principles, creating a truly empowered and kingdom-driven enterprise.
