Wes Miller's journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith, family, and strategic leadership. From a manager-employee to a majority shareholder CEO, and now in a pivotal role supporting his son's leadership, Wes's story with TeleData, Inc. is a compelling narrative of growth, trust, and impact.
Wes's early life saw him navigating a path away from his conservative Christian upbringing. However, a recommitment to his faith in 1991 marked a profound turning point. This decision, made shortly before meeting his wife, Sheila, reshaped his priorities. "It definitely gives you a different focus," Wes reflects. His previous inward focus on personal gratification shifted to a desire to impact people and live a life of purpose. This transformation was so significant that he recognized the need to change his entire social circle, understanding that he couldn't maintain a foot in two worlds. This foundational shift in his personal life would later deeply influence his professional journey.
Wes's career in IT spanned various industries, from automotive suppliers to banking. He always saw his value in understanding business processes rather than being solely technical. The opportunity to acquire TeleData, Inc. arose at a serendipitous moment. His son, Micah, an entrepreneurship major, was the catalyst. Wes, not naturally an entrepreneur, saw the potential for a powerful partnership. He proposed to Micah: "I'll do this if, if this is something you'd want to do. But I'm basically the experience to keep us where we're at. You're the drive and the energy that's going to make us grow." Micah's enthusiastic commitment set the stage for their joint venture.
What makes this story even more remarkable is the divine orchestration that preceded it. Six months prior, Wes had been offered a seemingly perfect job at a bank – better hours, benefits, and good money. Yet, he and Sheila felt an inexplicable lack of peace about it. "Logically, I can't put a finger on [why not]," he recalls. It was only six months later, sitting in the same bank applying for a small business loan to buy TeleData, that the bank president popped his head in and said, "I think I know why you felt like you shouldn't take that job." This profound moment solidified Wes's belief in God's guiding hand.
The transition from employee to owner was not without its difficulties. Wes admits, "For me, very complicated. It's been a struggle." He describes himself as the one who lays awake at night worrying about all that could go wrong, a stark contrast to his entrepreneurial son. The weight of being the majority owner and the ultimate decision-maker was immense. "It was hard to transition to be the guy that's, like, in charge," he shares. However, this period also forged some of the deepest friendships of his life, providing a vital source of godly counsel and support.
Wes recounts numerous instances of divine provision. When a major client decided to bring their services in-house, it was a moment of fear. Yet, within a week or two, a new opportunity arose, leading to a project even larger than the one they lost. "God's always provided," Wes states, acknowledging that this pattern has led to consistent year-over-year growth. Even the loss of key employees, initially seen as devastating, often led to better outcomes, revealing God's hand in shaping the team.
This journey has significantly deepened Wes's faith. He's learned to trust God in uncomfortable situations, recognizing that God cares about the details. "I waste time worrying about stuff that I can't control," he admits, "and then He just shows up and shows off." This reliance on God's plan has become a cornerstone of his leadership.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Wes's story is his commitment to his employees. Recognizing that many grew up differently, he actively seeks to meet their tangible needs. This includes helping them with financial issues including loans which are repaid through payroll deductions and offering financial counseling. "You just can't scare people into the kingdom, but you can love them in," he explains. By meeting physical needs and building trust, he creates an environment where spiritual needs can also be addressed through authentic relationships and living out his faith. His impact as a business owner has expanded exponentially with company growth, allowing him more opportunities to guide and mentor his team.
Perhaps the most poignant moment in Wes's journey was a conversation with a coworker when he was in the process of transition. Reflecting on the opportunity to work with his son, Wes expressed how cool it was to "be able to make this deal with Micah." His coworker quickly interjected, saying, "No, that's not what's cool. What's cool is that your son wants to do it with you." This insight resonated deeply, highlighting the unique bond and trust shared between father and son. This partnership, while not always easy, has been immensely rewarding, a testament to a shared journey of growth and purpose. Wes's story is a powerful reminder that true leadership is about more than just business; it's about faith, family, and empowering others to thrive.
