Lucas Rowley's journey from the corporate world to leading Rescue River is a testament to the transformative power of faith, prayer, and radical dependence on God. After nearly a decade in software, climbing the corporate ladder and achieving what many would consider the 'American dream,' Lucas and his wife, Hannah, experienced a profound shift in their priorities. They recognized that their pursuit of worldly comforts had overshadowed their devotion to Christ, leading to a pivotal moment of repentance and a renewed commitment to following God's leading.
This repentance wasn't just a change of heart; it was a call to open-handed living, releasing the security of predictable jobs and 401ks for the infinite resources of God. This new posture led them to say 'yes' to unexpected invitations, traveling to Mexico, the Middle East, and North Africa, visiting missionaries and witnessing God's work firsthand. These experiences broadened their perspective and prepared them for a unique calling.
Rescue River, the venture Lucas now leads, embodies this kingdom-focused approach to business. The organization employs women who are survivors of sexual trafficking, abuse, and violence in Uganda, teaching them the skill of tying flies for fly fishing. This isn't just about providing a job; it's about empowerment, dignity, and long-term sustainability. Lucas emphasizes the importance of product quality, aiming for 'great' rather than just 'good,' ensuring that the business can outlast him and eventually be handed over to the Ugandans themselves. This commitment to excellence ensures a consistent market for their products, providing stable employment and a pathway to healing for these vulnerable women.
The statistics in Uganda are staggering: approximately 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. Rescue River steps into this immense need by partnering with other organizations that provide legal, social, and counseling support. Their specific focus is on the 'now what?' – providing economic opportunity after abuse has occurred. This is crucial, as often the abuser is also the primary breadwinner, and their removal leaves families in dire financial straits. By teaching a valuable skill, Rescue River offers these women a means to earn good money and rebuild their lives.
Beyond the practical skills, Lucas and Hannah infuse biblical values into every aspect of Rescue River's operations. Daily devotions start the mornings, grounding the team in God's unchanging truth amidst a constantly shifting world. Big decisions are met with prayer, acknowledging their dependence on God's wisdom. Lucas recounts powerful instances of God's provision, like the miraculous appearance of specific fly-tying materials that were desperately needed, leading him to laughter and awe at God's faithfulness. These 'aha' moments reinforce the adventure of walking with God and the reality of His daily provision, even in challenging circumstances.
For Lucas, integrating faith into business is not a separate endeavor but an intrinsic part of his daily life. His primary advice for other business leaders seeking to leverage their work for God's kingdom is simple yet profound: prayer and dependence. He is committed to fasting every Wednesday, a practice that reframes his heart, cultivates compassion, and opens doors for conversations about faith. He encourages praying for people in the moment, right where they are, acknowledging their hurts and bringing them before the King of Kings. This immediate, empathetic prayer creates a powerful connection and demonstrates the tangible presence of faith in the workplace.
Lucas highlights the subtle danger of comfort and success in the corporate world, where it's easy to forget the need for God's intervention. In a context where things often 'work out okay' without explicit prayer, dependence can wane. However, in his current environment in Uganda, with daily challenges like unpredictable traffic and an aging car, prayer becomes a constant necessity, a vivid reminder of his reliance on God for safety and provision. This constant dependence, he believes, is far more powerful and deeply transformative than we can comprehend.
Lucas Rowley's story is a compelling blueprint for how to live out a kingdom calling in the marketplace. It's a journey of reorientation, open-handedness, and unwavering dependence on God, demonstrating that when we surrender our plans and talents to Him, He can use them to bring about profound transformation in the lives of others and for His glory.
