In a world that often equates success with relentless striving, Sederiya Thompson's journey offers a refreshing and powerful counter-narrative. The founder of The Secret Sauce, Sederiya coaches women to unearth their calling and helps businesses cultivate loyal followings. Her path, however, was not always clear, marked by a profound transformation from corporate burnout to a life deeply rooted in faith and purpose.
Sederiya's business, The Secret Sauce, operates on two key fronts. On one hand, she empowers women who feel trapped and exhausted in their careers and lives to identify and pursue their God-given gifts, leading them to a life of desired freedom. On the other, she consults businesses with great products but lacking a "cult following", leveraging her extensive customer experience from working for powerhouses like Starbucks and PepsiCo. Her expertise lies in uncovering issues and gaps within the customer journey and experience, helping businesses foster the kind of loyalty that drives repeat transactions. She vividly recalls her time at Starbucks during the era of Howard Schultz and PepsiCo under Indra Nooyi, observing how these giants cultivated environments where employees had genuine buy-in, leading to exceptional customer experiences.
Her personal journey to founding The Secret Sauce was born out of a deep sense of unfulfillment despite a successful corporate career. As a senior marketing manager in public transportation, Sederiya consistently achieved promotions and accolades, yet felt an increasing emptiness. "I would work nights and weekends trying to keep up with the playing of the "band", but they just kept drumming faster and faster, and I couldn't tap dance fast enough to catch up," she shares. This relentless pursuit of external validation, tied to her sense of worthiness and fueled by perfectionism and public perception, eventually led to a breaking point. She realized her job had become an idol, and the temporary wins it offered were no substitute for God's love and fulfillment.
In her desperation, Sederiya began a fervent plea to God for transformation. This was brought through therapy, reexamining her core beliefs, deep engagement with scripture, prayer, and fasting. She sought to understand her inherent worth, recognizing that God loved her unconditionally, independent of her achievements. This period of intense spiritual seeking led to a clear, divine directive: it was time to leave her corporate role. A self-proclaimed risk-averse individual and a responsible eldest daughter, Sederiya sought multiple confirmations from God. Her father, who had retired from the same company, had always prayed for her perseverance in her job. However, in a pivotal moment, he prayed for her to find something new – a significant confirmation. The final, humorous sign came after asking God to use anything to confirm His will, which came through a podcast about an episode of 'Living Single' where a character quits her job, with the word 'quit' repeated numerous times. These signs, coupled with a specific date revealed in a dream, solidified her decision.
When Sederiya announced her departure to her department of about 60 people, the reaction was overwhelming. "People started crying and there was an audible gasp in the room. I was so unprepared for the reaction," she recounts. Even more profoundly, colleagues approached her, revealing that God had also been speaking to them about transformation and leaving their roles. This outpouring of shared experience served as a powerful affirmation that she was indeed following God's will.
Today, Sederiya's faith is the bedrock of her daily operations and leadership. She carries God into every aspect of her business, from praying before challenging meetings to creating an atmosphere of worship and peace in her workspace. She intentionally prays for her clients, seeking divine wisdom for their specific situations. This intentionality extends to how she invests her time, talents, and resources. After a three-month sabbatical post-quitting her job, she sought structure and community, leading her to a Christian business program and a small group at her church. She emphasizes the importance of connecting with community, especially in a digital age, and how God provides exactly what she needs, like in her finances and her health.
Sederiya's biggest takeaway from her journey is the profound lesson of rest and dependence on God. She learned that true rest is an act of trust, recognizing that provision comes from Him, not solely from her works or paycheck. This shift from striving to abiding has allowed her life to flow more naturally and with greater confidence.
For other Christian business leaders, Sederiya's advice is simple yet profound: "Give your time and your heart back to God." She encourages leaders to involve God in the smallest details of their lives, from asking for guidance on daily schedules to seeking His wisdom in every conversation and decision. This deep, relational dependence, she believes, leads to a life that flows with grace and confidence, fostering a joyful partnership with God in all endeavors. "Step into His flow of grace instead of the world's grind."
