In the demanding world of entrepreneurship, many leaders find themselves caught in a relentless grind, sacrificing personal well-being and family for the elusive promise of success. Lucas Hall, owner of High Quality Construction and Consulting, knows this struggle intimately. His journey from an 80-hour work week, battling addiction and anxiety, to a life of purpose-driven leadership offers a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith and surrender.
Lucas, a mechanical engineer by trade, initially found success as a handyman, but the demands of running a business quickly took their toll. "My first year was 80-hour weeks. It was running hands-on freight hours and running my business freight hours. And it kind of crushed my family. Crushed me, too, because I went from drinking a lot to drinking more, to my wife telling me to quit drinking. So I started day drinking." This unsustainable pace led to a breaking point where he was forced to choose between his addictions and his marriage. His wife’s intervention led him to a conference where he surrendered his life back to Christ, marking the beginning of a profound personal and professional transformation.
Lucas’s story highlights a crucial truth: everything in life is symbiotic. "If you don't have a good relationship with God going on, it's going to affect your business and your family. If you don't have a good family relationship going on, it's going to affect your business and your relationship with God. If you have a terrible business, it will affect your relationship with God and your family. That's just how it works. If you don't get all three of those ecosystems into a good mesh, things are going to fail."
The turning point for Lucas came with surrender. He initially tried to overcome his addictions through willpower, but found himself cycling back into old patterns. "I had to surrender." This surrender extended beyond his personal life into his business. He learned to trust God as his provider, a lesson powerfully reinforced during a financial crisis. After a mission trip, his business faced a significant shortfall. "I was panicking. It was a $20,000 bill that I did not have the funds for. I think it was five grand short." Yet, God supernaturally provided, demonstrating His faithfulness. This experience solidified Lucas’s understanding that his business was not solely his own, but God’s.
This shift in perspective allowed Lucas to release control and embrace a new way of leading. He began delegating tasks, moving from being a hands-on contractor to a strategic businessman. "I've learned to be a businessman and a general contractor instead of trying to do everything myself. I've had to learn to trust people." This newfound trust extended to his team, empowering them to excel in their areas of expertise. He also recognized the importance of focusing on higher-value projects, moving away from constantly chasing small jobs on social media to strategically investing in Google advertising for larger, more sustainable growth.
Beyond business growth, Lucas’s faith has transformed his approach to his work. He now sees his business as a platform for ministry. He shared a powerful example of repairing a poorly constructed deck for a customer, not only demonstrating his expertise but also embodying Christian values of integrity and service. "I showed a customer what right looks like... I turned a burden into a blessing." He also undertakes benevolence projects, using his skills to bless those in need, such as building a much-needed bathroom for a single mother. These acts of service are not for self-promotion, but a genuine expression of his faith.
Lucas’s vision for his company has expanded far beyond personal gain. While he initially aimed for a multi-million dollar business, God has given him a much grander vision: to build a company that generates enough profit to give away tens of millions of dollars to support missions and bless communities. "My vision's small. I can do that one. The vision God gave me is for something about 10 to 20 times that size... his vision on 100 million was to give away 10." This audacious vision is rooted in his desire to be a channel for God's provision and impact.
When asked what he would tell his 21-year-old self, Lucas emphasized the importance of prioritizing a relationship with Jesus. "The most critical thing is to go back and start talking to Jesus... you need to have a different goal than money and status." He also highlighted the critical role of mentorship and community. He actively seeks out mentors who are further along in their spiritual and professional journeys, recognizing that "men without mentors don't do well." He surrounds himself with kingdom-minded individuals, learning from their wisdom and experience.
Lucas Hall’s journey is a powerful reminder that true leadership, especially Christian leadership, is not about striving for personal success alone, but about surrendering to God’s plan, embracing integrity, and using one’s platform to bless others. It’s a journey from the relentless grind to the abundant grace found in living a life fully surrendered to Christ.
