Building on the Rock: How Christ-Centered Entrepreneurship Transforms Your Journey

In the dynamic world of entrepreneurship, where innovation and ambition often take center stage, the foundation upon which you build can make all the difference. For MJ Mann, founder of Elko Systems, his journey into entrepreneurship and product-creation became a profound testament to the power of building on a Christ-centered foundation. It's a story not just of business acumen, but of deep personal transformation, resilience, and unwavering faith.

MJ's path to entrepreneurship was anything but linear. From welding to real estate, he eventually found himself in the demanding realm of enterprise SaaS sales. It was here, amidst the steep learning curves and the relentless pursuit of shifting goalposts, that a deeper calling began to stir. "I'd always felt in my heart I had the capacity and the skill set to do something a little bit more with my life," MJ shares. This innate drive, coupled with a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the monotonous aspects of his role, sparked an idea: to leverage AI to automate workflows and solve real pain points within the B2B software market.

The Divine Detour: When God Intervenes

MJ's initial excitement led him to dive headfirst into his venture, perhaps, as he admits, without fully consulting God on the timing. Then came the unexpected. A severe gout flare-up brought him to his knees, literally. "I don't know what kind of message God was sending me there, but I think it was, hey, before this thing is going to get rolling, you need me to back you throughout this process." This period of forced rest and physical debilitation became a profound spiritual awakening. It wasn't wasted time; it was "Jesus time" – a period of complete rewiring and spiritual nourishment. "It wasn't just a season I couldn't work. It was, Jesus, you are forcing me to see you first." This humbling experience shifted his perspective, allowing him to approach his entrepreneurial endeavor with fresh eyes, renewed gratitude, and a deep understanding of his dependence on God.

Entrepreneurship as an Act of Worship

For MJ, entrepreneurship is more than just building a successful company; it's an extension of his worship. He sees it as a space where creativity and business converge, fueled by a "curious soul" that God has placed within him. This journey is about creating a better life for his family, but ultimately, it's about being able to worship God in a way that excites him. "It's not just here's 10% of my tithe from working my nine to five. Instead, I want to load the boat. I want to give and live in abundance through Christ." This perspective transforms the daily grind into a purposeful endeavor, where every step is an opportunity to honor God and serve His kingdom. Even as a solo founder, MJ is intentional about embedding Kingdom values into the DNA of Elko Systems. While the full realization of this culture is a work in progress, the heartbeat of his vision is clear: giving and spreading God's love. "Giving is going to be a big part of whatever I do in the future... making sure that God is at the forefront of everything that's being done." This commitment ensures that as the company grows, its purpose remains rooted in service and generosity, and ultimately serves as an Act of Worship.

Navigating the Unknown with Faith

Building a startup is often described as building the plane as you fly it, requiring immense faith and courage. MJ's journey is a testament to this, where the "carpet is being rolled out beneath my feet" as he takes one step at a time. His "come to Jesus moment" during his illness fundamentally reshaped how Christ influences his daily decisions. It led to new rhythms: starting each day with Bible reading, prayer, and gratitude. This morning routine isn't just a habit; it's the essential foundation that anchors him amidst the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship. "If I can't form that foundation in the morning, something is off."

Advice for the Christ-Centered Entrepreneur

For fellow believers embarking on their entrepreneurial journeys, MJ offers profound encouragement: "Bad times are not forever... God will use everything to mold you for what you're supposed to be and for what his purpose is." He emphasizes that trials and tribulations are often God's way of breaking down old structures to lay the foundation for something new. To be a successful entrepreneur, one must be willing to break old habits and rebuild with God's backing. "This is happening to you for a purpose to put you in a place where God can use you at that point."

MJ Mann's story is a powerful reminder that true success in entrepreneurship isn't just about market disruption or financial gain; it's about aligning your purpose with God's, allowing Him to transform you in the process, and building a legacy that extends beyond the bottom line. It's about trusting that as you put one foot in front of the other, God is faithfully rolling out the carpet, guiding you toward His ultimate vision for your life and your business.
