Mark Slider's journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of people-first leadership, guided by unwavering faith. After 27 years in education, 17 as a school administrator, Mark faced a crossroads. The escalating stress and anxiety from a system increasingly misaligned with his values began to take a severe toll on his health. His medical team's stark warning – 'the job was gonna kill me' – became a catalyst for change. He realized that a 'salary and benefits to die for' was almost literally becoming a death sentence.
At this pivotal moment, Mark's faith intervened. He initially considered a path in financial advising, driven by a genuine desire to care for people. However, a divine redirection led him to Lighthouse Vocational Services, an organization dedicated to serving intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals. This move, seemingly into the unknown, quickly revealed itself as a faith-forward environment where his passion for helping others could truly flourish. He found that the human services world, much like education, was about equipping individuals with skills for life and work, but with the added blessing of work-life balance.
Mark's leadership philosophy is rooted in servant leadership. He genuinely and authentically cares for his people, prioritizing relationships over transactions. As a development director, he focuses on building authentic connections, trusting that 'God will provide the resources.' He believes his role is to 'love and care for people,' and it's 'God's job to lay it on their heart to give.' This approach liberates him from the pressure of forcing outcomes, allowing him to truly support individuals on their unique journeys.
A profound lesson Mark learned through his experiences, particularly during challenging times as an executive director, was the importance of discerning personal responsibility. He realized the immense burden he carried, believing 'everything that happened in life was my fault.' This led to significant stress and anxiety. Through reflection, he understood that as a leader, he is not responsible for the actions of others – whether parents, children, or even professionals who act unprofessionally. His ultimate responsibility lies with himself. This realization brought a profound sense of peace and freedom, emphasizing that 'we have limited control in what we can do, and we got to be at peace with that.' He stresses the importance of not accepting blame or responsibility that was never rightfully ours.
Today, Mark continues to serve through his own business, LEADNLEADERS, supporting school districts, private schools, executive leaders, and parents with homeschooling, special education advocacy, and college planning. He also remains an adjunct professor, continuing to 'scratch the education itch' while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. His story is a powerful reminder that true leadership, especially in the face of adversity, is about prioritizing people, trusting in a higher purpose, and understanding the boundaries of our own responsibility. It's about moving from a place of burnout to a breakthrough, where serving others aligns with a life of peace and purpose.
