Sean Behensky, President of Custom Machine Motioneering, embodies a leadership philosophy rooted in virtue, diligence, and love. His journey from a college student walking through the motions to a leader who inspires and mentors is a testament to the power of a simple, yet profound question: "Don't you want more out of life?"
This pivotal question, posed by a college friend, ignited a transformation in Sean. It led him to declare his faith, embrace his core values, and ultimately shaped his approach to leadership in every aspect of his life – from his company to his community involvement.
Sean spent a decade in the banking world, a career he describes as a "hamster wheel" of routine. While he held the title of Vice President, he yearned for something more impactful. His opportunity arose when a client, Steve Johnson of Custom Machine Motioneering, recognized Sean's potential. Steve, seeking a sharp individual to run his company without selling it, saw in Sean the perfect fit. This unexpected offer launched Sean into his first true leadership role, a position he’s held for three years.
At Custom Machine Motioneering, Sean has cultivated a unique workplace culture. He introduced optional Monday morning prayer meetings, which, after an initial period of surface-level prayers, evolved into a space for genuine vulnerability and miraculous outcomes. He recounts a powerful story of an employee struggling with addiction who, through the company's support and connection to a pastor, found Christ and overcame his challenges without needing a rehab facility. This, Sean emphasizes, is a prime example of "marketplace ministry" in action.
Beyond spiritual growth, Sean has focused on fostering a supportive and engaging environment. Monthly employee meals, featuring local restaurants, and quarterly bonuses contribute to a "cool, chill, laid-back place" where people feel valued. He's also adapted to the evolving needs of the younger generation, implementing "flex Fridays" to offer a better work-life balance, recognizing that for many, time is more valuable than overtime pay.
Sean's leadership style is deeply rooted in mentorship. This isn't just a philosophy he applies within his company; it extends to his interactions with the student athletes he officiates and even his customers. "We don't just give them a machine and say good luck," he explains, "we help them set it up, show them cool features, and connect them with other customers. We take a mentoring parent approach."
This innate desire to guide and support others is a cornerstone of his character. He sees himself as a "big brother" to many of his younger employees, fostering an environment where growth and learning are encouraged.
Sean readily admits that leading a company is a continuous learning process. "Nothing's going to train you for that," he says, likening it to parenthood. He actively seeks personal and spiritual growth, attending church regularly and participating in the CBMC (Christian Business Men's Connection). Looking ahead to 2026, he's committed to finding a dedicated Christian mentor and reading at least one book a month, recognizing the importance of ongoing development.
His journey highlights that true leadership isn't just about titles or financial success; it's about making a tangible difference in the lives of others, fostering a culture of care, and continually striving for personal and spiritual growth. Sean Behensky's story is an inspiring example of how a leader can transform a workplace into a community, guided by the enduring principles of virtue, diligence, and love.
