Beyond the Book: How One Educator Ignites a Passion for Reading and Purpose in Young Lives

In a world increasingly dominated by screens and fleeting attention spans, the simple act of reading can feel like a lost art, especially for young people. Yet, for Jaer Jones, a middle school English teacher and founder of Jaer Media Group LLC, igniting a passion for reading and guiding young lives toward purpose is not just a profession; it's a calling.

For 19 years, Jaer has been shaping young minds in St. Louis, Missouri. His journey, however, began long before the classroom. With a background as a youth minister and working in a juvenile facility, Jaer has always been drawn to working with kids. This deep-seated passion, cultivated since his early twenties, has transformed his teaching from a job into a profound mission.

From Youth Ministry to the Classroom

Jaer Media Group LLC, established five years ago, initially aimed at book publishing. But a pivotal realization in the classroom shifted its focus. Witnessing the stark contrast between students who embraced reading and those who struggled, Jaer felt a burning desire to write stories that could serve as a form of self-help for young readers. "It really lit a fire in me to not really write nonfiction books on self-help, but to write stories that could still be self-help," he explains. His goal is to create narratives that resonate with young people, offering relatable experiences and powerful messages.

His debut novel, 'My Invisible Father,' exemplifies this vision. The book explores the complexities of growing up without a present father figure, following three teenagers navigating unique challenges. One character's father is absent by choice, another's is incarcerated, and a third's is physically present but emotionally distant. Through their individual journeys, the book highlights the mishaps that can occur in the absence of a father, while also showcasing the vital role of mentors, teachers, coaches, and youth ministers, who play a part in a young person's life. The narrative weaves in elements of mystery, triumph, and even tragedy, culminating in an unexpected twist that brings the characters together. Jaer emphasizes the book's grit, redemption, and action, making it engaging for both young readers and adults.

Integrating Music and Literature

What truly sets Jaer's approach apart is his innovative integration of music with literature. Recognizing the power of music to engage young audiences, he created a "book soundtrack" for 'My Invisible Father.' Each song is intricately tied to the plot and characters, helping readers connect more deeply with the story. He's even produced music videos, offering a visual dimension to the narrative. This multi-media approach is particularly beneficial for struggling readers, allowing them to hear the story's themes and visualize the events, thereby enhancing comprehension. "This music could be an aid to them, because they can hear... and then be able to see those things actually happening in the books, and they'll be able to comprehend a little better," Jaer notes.

Extending Impact Beyond the Classroom

Jaer's commitment extends beyond his own classroom. He actively visits juvenile facilities, generously donating copies of his book. His primary motivation isn't profit, but rather to foster a love for reading. He observes a concerning correlation between illiteracy and incarceration, a reality he witnessed firsthand during his time sering at a juvenile facility. This observation solidified his dedication to writing for young people, aiming to provide them with engaging stories that not only entertain but also underscore the importance of reading for personal development. "First, I want them to read. Secondly, I want them to read my book. Thirdly, I want them to read the Bible," he states, outlining his tiered approach to literacy and spiritual growth.

Faith as the Foundation

His faith is the bedrock of his endeavors. Guided by the principle, "in everything you do, do it all in the name of the Lord," Jaer navigates the delicate balance of expressing his faith within a public school setting. While direct evangelism may be restricted, he believes in pointing others to God through his actions, words, music, and books. This commitment led him to start a Bible study and prayer group at his school, which has grown from three to eight members in a short time. He consciously weaves biblical principles into his conversations with students, addressing their struggles and encouraging them to seek a higher power, even if not explicitly naming it.

Inspiring Purpose and Fulfillment

Jaer's journey is a testament to the power of passion and purpose. He encourages other Christian business leaders to pursue what they are passionate about, even if immediate financial success isn't apparent. "I'm more fulfilled than I am successful in my business, and I'm okay with that," he shares. He views his current efforts as sowing seeds, anticipating a greater harvest when he transitions to full-time writing after retiring from teaching. His contentment, rooted in his faith, allows him to find joy and fulfillment in his work, regardless of external rewards. "If it's God's will, He'll make it fruitful the way He wants it to be fruitful," he affirms.

Jaer Jones is more than an author or a teacher; he is a transformational leader, using every tool at his disposal- literature, music, and unwavering faith- to inspire young people to read, grow, and discover their God-given purpose.
