Andrew Rauch, founder of Venture + Philanthropy, shares his transformative journey from a driven tech executive to a purpose-led leader, emphasizing the power of faith in navigating life's challenges and building a lasting legacy.
Born in Austria and raised in the Bronx, Andrew's early life was shaped by his immigrant parents' pursuit of the American dream. His father's mantra, "Go make a lot of money and it'll solve all your problems," became a guiding principle, leading Andrew to a successful career in the burgeoning tech industry. He excelled in startups, even giving himself the title of "Chief Technology Ambassador," flying on private jets and evangelizing technology. From a worldly perspective, he had it all.
However, this outward success masked an inner brokenness. In 2010, after experiencing a divorce and the passing of his first wife, Andrew reached a turning point. It was through an executive coach, who recognized the deeper struggles beneath the surface, that Andrew was introduced to Christ. This moment of brokenness became a moment of profound transformation, leading him to accept Jesus as his Savior and Lord.
Andrew reflects on the shift he experienced post-conversion: "I think one of the first things that I noticed that changed was probably more joy in my life." The pressure to perform and achieve worldly success began to lift, replaced by a deeper sense of purpose and peace. He realized that while striving for success isn't inherently bad, it becomes problematic "when it becomes the main thing."
Central to Andrew's philosophy is the "Be the Bison" metaphor. Inspired by his visits to Yellowstone's Lamar Valley, he explains that unlike cattle or deer that run away from storms, bison instinctively run into them. This powerful image represents strength, courage, and unity. For Andrew, it's a spiritual analogy: "How do you get through the storms that God places or allows in your life?" He emphasizes that while we are called to be strong and courageous, we are not meant to face these storms alone. “If I don't have the greater joy of what's ahead of the storm, I'm doing it by myself. And I don't think God wants us to go through the storm by ourselves.”
This principle now guides his work at Venture + Philanthropy, where he helps organizations not only grow but also embrace a "view to greater giving" and leave a lasting legacy. He seeks to partner with mission-driven organizations and leaders, like Pastor Serve, which focuses on strengthening pastors and the church.
Andrew observes a growing trend in the leadership space: a desire for connection and community among Christian executives, addressing a common sense of loneliness. He's actively working to launch the Association of Christian Executives, a digital platform to foster this community, focusing on connection, growth (through spiritual and leadership formation), and giving.
When it comes to integrating faith and business, Andrew applies the "Be the Bison" analogy. He acknowledges the daily struggle of living in the world but not being of the world. "I think we have a bison moment to be strong, be courageous… going into the storm with a little bit of speed so you get through it quicker." He admits that while he sometimes shares his faith boldly, at other times, he walks more cautiously, a testament to the ongoing journey of faith integration.
Andrew also shares his framework for "life generosity," using the acronym L.I.F.E.:
Labor/Leadership
Influence
Finances
Expertise/Wisdom
He encourages individuals and organizations to consider how they can be generous with each of these resources, recognizing that not everyone can contribute in the same way at all times. This holistic approach to giving allows for diverse contributions and strengthens the collective impact.
For those seeking to integrate their faith into their work, Andrew offers wisdom from Proverbs 3:5-6:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight."
He emphasizes the importance of trusting God over personal efforts and acknowledging Him in all decisions. This scripture, he believes, is a guiding principle for navigating life and business with purpose and faith.
Andrew Rauch's journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith, demonstrating how a life once driven by worldly success can be redirected towards a greater purpose, impacting not only individuals but also organizations and communities for the Kingdom.
