What if excellence in business wasn’t just about standing out—but about worship? In a recent Firm Foundations conversation, I sat down with Trina Shaffer, founder of Baked with Grace, to explore how faith, craftsmanship, and calling intersect in the work we build each day. Her story is a powerful reminder that when our identity is rooted in Christ, even something as simple as a cupcake can become a channel of grace.
Baked With Grace began not as a business venture, but as a prayer answered. Grappling with severe postpartum anxiety and depression after her son Daniel's birth in 2019, Trina sought solace and connection. She prayed for an activity that would calm her mind, draw her closer to God, and allow her to bond with Daniel in a healthy way. The answer came in the kitchen. What started as simple baking sessions with her son, using recipe card pictures and shared laughter, soon blossomed. Friends and family, captivated by her creations, began requesting desserts for their events. When her daughter, Grace, arrived, the name 'Baked With Grace' perfectly encapsulated the essence of her burgeoning enterprise: a foundation built on love, grace, and meticulous care.
In the entrepreneurial journey, it's easy to intertwine personal identity with business success. Accolades, sales figures, and public praise can become intoxicating. However, Trina consciously guards against this, anchoring her identity firmly in Christ. "My business is only as great as God will allow it to be," she asserts. This conviction acts as a shield, reminding her that while compliments and recognition are pleasant, her true worth and calling are found in her relationship with God. This biblical grounding ensures that her business flourishes not just in profit, but in character, reflecting Christ-like principles in every interaction.
For Trina, baking is more than a skill; it's an act of worship. Each order is approached with honor and prayer, recognizing the significance of being chosen to contribute to her customers' most cherished moments. She recalls two poignant stories: a young woman learning to pipe roses in honor of her late daughter, Rose, and another who sought to honor her recently deceased mother by continuing her baking legacy. These experiences underscore the profound impact of her work, transforming simple desserts into vessels of comfort, connection, and healing. Trina often works late, accompanied by worship music, finding peace and presence with God as she creates. This intentional infusion of faith into her craft elevates it beyond mere commerce, making every cupcake a tangible expression of honor and care.
Even with a strong spiritual foundation, the pressures of business can be immense. Deadlines, customer expectations, and financial realities can test anyone's resolve. Trina admits there are moments when grace is challenged, especially with demanding requests. Yet, her commitment to biblical principles—integrity, servanthood, kindness—serves as her compass. She reminds herself daily of her calling and who God has called her to be in her business. This steadfastness allows her to navigate difficult situations with composure, upholding a standard of excellence that extends beyond the product itself.
Her faith has been particularly tested during a season of family health challenges, with her mother facing health issues and her stepfather battling stage 4 cancer. In these moments, the need to pour from an empty cup becomes a stark reality. Trina emphasizes the critical importance of continually filling herself with the Holy Spirit and God's presence, recognizing that this spiritual sustenance is her ultimate sustainability. This commitment to personal spiritual well-being ensures she can maintain excellence not just in her business, but also in her roles as a wife, mother, and daughter.
Trina's passion extends to teaching, a facet of her business that brings her immense joy. She offers classes where students learn buttercream techniques, color theory, and the art of floral piping.
Having been self-taught due to financial constraints, she now delights in sharing her gift, empowering others to discover their own creative potential. Her classes have become spaces for connection, healing, and newfound confidence, attracting individuals from all walks of life—couples on date nights, those in mourning, and aspiring bakers.
This generosity stems from a belief in abundance, a stark contrast to the scarcity mindset that can plague entrepreneurs. Trina rejects the notion of hoarding knowledge, understanding that her gifts are from God and meant to be shared.
This perspective is further evidenced by her commitment to giving back: a portion of every sale goes to New City Youth, and she actively participates in Cakes from the Heart, providing custom cakes for underprivileged children. This intentional giving is a powerful demonstration of her faith, transforming her business into a conduit of blessing for her community.
Trina's creative endeavors extend beyond baking. She is the co-author of two children's books, "One Tall Apple Tree" and "We Are Called to Be," both rooted in biblical principles and designed to instill God's love and identity in children. Her upcoming e-book, "Blooming Motherhood," offers insights into balancing family life with entrepreneurship, enriched with personal testimonials of how her business has touched lives in profound ways. These literary works further amplify her message of faith, purpose, and the transformative power of living out one's calling.
Trina's journey offers a powerful encouragement to other Christian business owners and leaders: always remember where your identity lies. Your value is not tied to your business's performance, but to your unwavering identity in Christ. What you are building is bigger than what you see; you are impacting lives, families, and communities. By keeping the principles of blessing, honoring God, and serving others at the forefront, any business can become a powerful force for good, built on the unshakeable foundation of faith.
