Alex Dumas, a professional speaker, emcee, and leadership expert, shares a powerful testimony of how faith has shaped his entrepreneurial journey and leadership philosophy. His story is a testament to resilience, divine guidance, and the transformative power of integrating Christian principles into every aspect of business.
Dumas's journey began with a series of profound challenges in 2015. Within a 90-day cycle, his son was born, his mother passed away, and he lost his job. This period, which he describes as a 'coming to Jesus moment,' forced him to confront his faith and purpose. "What looked like my defeat," he reflects, "was God setting me up, forming me, forging me in the steel and the fire for what was to come." This crucible led him to discover his life's work in speaking, coaching, and digital marketing, transforming what seemed like an overnight success into a decade-long journey of growth and preparation.
For Dumas, integrating faith into his day-to-day leadership and operations goes beyond traditional practices like Bible study or podcasts, though these are part of his life. His primary focus is on being—being a person who uplifts, encourages, and champions others. He candidly shares his past as an 'angry black man,' disgruntled and without a relationship with God. This stark contrast highlights his transformation: "With Him, it's like, okay, I have this opportunity to speak life to people, to spread love, to plant seeds of positivity." This intentionality in every interaction, every word spoken, and every action taken, is how he embodies his faith. He believes the same energy can be channeled into love as into hate, choosing to be a source of positive influence.
A pivotal decision guided by faith was his family's move from New York to North Carolina. What started as procrastination turned into a rapid, faith-driven relocation. "It took me and my wife eight years to figure out how to move in eight weeks," he recounts. Despite the recklessness of moving without jobs or family support, and without even seeing their new apartment, they were driven by a conviction to escape a dangerous environment and embrace a new chapter. This leap of faith, seemingly counter to worldly business practices, led to thriving and growth. Dumas emphasizes that such a profound positive outcome could only be attributed to God, illustrating that sometimes, leaving the familiar for the unknown is essential for true growth.
Dumas's faith profoundly influences his approach to generosity. He shares an impactful story from four years ago when he and fellow coaches organized an event to fund a group coaching program. Their coach challenged them to donate the raised funds to charity instead. This shift transformed his motivation from personal gain to a 'bigger purpose.' "My energy before that was very much, 'Hey, Aundre, can you please help me out? I'm in over my head.' Now that shifts to, 'Hey, this is what we're doing for these organizations. Can you share this post? Can you tell tag somebody?'" This decision not only led to hundreds of thousands of dollars being raised for various non-profits but also inspired others to adopt a similar model. He advocates for being a wealth circulator, understanding that money flows through him to bless others, aligning with the principle that not all money is good money, and intentionality in giving is paramount.
To other Christian business leaders, Dumas offers a powerful encouragement: surround yourself with the right people. He draws on his mother's wisdom, "birds of a feather flock together," and his own experience of having to separate from friends who were not aligned with his growth. He challenges leaders to ask: "Am I trying to have the feather of an eagle, or am I trying to have the feathers of a duck?" He stresses the importance of a network that not only celebrates you but also challenges you, points out blind spots, and inspires you to grow. Finding fellow Christian entrepreneurs who live out their faith, not just speak about it, and who are generators as well as consumers of positive energy, is crucial for impactful leadership and personal transformation.
Alex Dumas's journey is a testament to the power of faith in overcoming adversity, guiding decisions, fostering generosity, and building a community that champions growth and purpose. His work focuses on leadership development and executive presence, particularly for leaders of color, helping them craft their stories and find their confidence to contribute meaningfully to their organizations and the world.
